  • The deep wheels do indeed look mighty silly.

What hubs/rims? I have some box-y section ambrosio rims laced to goldtecs. They're on a Condor that is not being ridden (but about to be rebuilt) Might be open to swaps.

  • They are cheap wheels, that I picked up in eBay, branded "state". I wouldn't couch for them being if any great quality but they do look new and in great condition.

If you are interested let me know and I'll do pics and ring for you.

  • The frame is a 58cm C-to-C. I am 6'2", so it is in the limit of being big enough for me, although I'm sure it will be fine.

But, bearing that in mind does it make sense to choose crank length specific to sizing? If so, should I go shorter or longer?
I had presumed shorter, so that the min drop from hip to pedal, at the top of a pedal stroke, is maximised? But, that does mean that the maximum drop is shortened at the bottom of the stroke, so I would raise the saddle more to compensate. Seems like a paradox.

    Maybe it doesn't matter?

  • New realisation - this wants 630mm wheels ideally.

So, when I build up wheels it will be on 630mm rims.

    Mental note.

  • Or 622 with fatter tyres if you like.

  • ambrosio rims laced to goldtecs.

    Out.

  • Time for an update.

Thanks to some help from Brixton Cycles, the old headset and remaining BB cup have been removed and my Stronglight A9 classic has been installed. This required some facing of the fork crown and head tube so I'm glad I outsourced that!

I have put back the original stem, bars and Weinmann 750, Vainquer 999, centre pull front brake. This will take KoolStop 6 Dot salmon compound pads that are on order.

Also put the existing moustache bars back into the stem. I doubt they are original but they may be and I like them.

As for wheels, I decided I couldn't live with those horrible black aero-ish State POCs. @Aroogah said it all really.

So, as they are old but still true and look good I am keeping as much of the original wheels as possible. They also have the benefit of being 27inch.

The front wheel will stay as is and I will rebuild the rear rim into a Miche Primato high flange track hub. That will be my first ever wheel build, which I am looking forward to. Any tips on how to measure ERD for spoke length calculations?

Once the wheel is built, and the Andel Zenith crankset is in my hands, I can measure the chainline and buy an appropriate Shimano UN55 bottom bracket.

    Phew.

  • Liking those 'stache bars

  • The front hub will need a service, and also some of the spokes look pretty rusty / pitted.

Will the spokes be more trouble and danger than they are worth. Should I rebuild the rim onto the hub, once it's serviced?

  • Looks good. Link to your garden chairs?

  • IKEA, obvs.

  • Dunno if resolved but I have a complete 165mm 47t 3/32 cyclotouriste chainset avec cups, axle and even a crank extractor sat idle if you're interested...

  • Thanks for that Ed, I may be interested.

As I said, I have specced out going down the modern route and am looking at 1/8, not 3/32. But, nothing set in stone so I'll bear you in mind. How much are you looking for out of interest? Also, what's the axle length and cup thread type?

  • Pm'd

  • Wow that TA chainset is the full house!

  • I have some pretty good 27" tyres doing nothing here with your name on @mashton. Brand new I think, bought from someone here then never used.

I would put new spokes in.

  • Oh, that's kind but a new set of Schwalbe 27" just arrived yesterday.

Increasingly I think you are right about the new spokes.

But, my plan is to service the hub, which definitely needs it. If it is knackered then a rebuild is definitely required, so no decision to make. If it is salvageable then we'll see.

  • Post number 2 on this thread is already starting to haunt me.

    Told you ;)

This is looking really good, top work.

  • Just spotted that Planet X have large flange silver 36h front track hubs at £4.99 in their autumn close down sale.

    £4.99!

I should have saved myself the £6.99 for the cone spanner to service the hub. In fact, I may take it back.

    £4.99!

  • This is looking really good, top work.

    Thanks

  • Hmm, shall I just get some new rims as well and be done with it?

  • No, I'm meant to be saving money and components.

Easy enough to swap rims at a later date if the existing ones fail.

  • Just spent half an hour with the spoke key and every nipple I tried to loosen was seized to the spoke.

I'm pretty close to getting new rims here and having a complete new wheelset.

  • Rims ordered.

    Ha!

A wheel building here I come.

I think I'll service the front hub anyway, just for practice and I might be able to sell it.
