  • Contact points all on, thanks for the sweet seatpost @bikes_knob.

Brakes tested using the hobby horse technique and pads toed in to sort out the squeal. A delicate operation involving a large adjustable wrench and bending the caliper arms.

I'm expecting to finish this tomorrow if the post arrives and I can remember how to use a chain tool.

  • I like this more than I expected to. I have a B17 if you are so inclined.

  • I'll take that as a compliment!

I've never got on with brooks, I love me a charge spoon.

  • Good job with the wheels, they look great on the frame. As above, pleasantly surprised with how good this looks.

  • So, this is the front mech that I took off the frame. I think it's a Gran Sport Valentino.

    a) is it worth much?
    b) how do I clean it up?

  • I've just remembered that the BB shell is 66mm and now I'm worried that it will all go tits up. We shall see.

  • @mashton Looks great. Quite the transformation in one month. Thanks for the brews!

  • Finished. For now.

  • It rides beautifully. The bars feel a touch odd, but I haven't ridden swept backs before. Everything else is glorious.

  • Looking good, if it were mine, I'd move the saddle a bit forward to compensate for the slack angle and I'd change the stem and flip the bars.

  • Congrats! Deffo suitable for both fixin' and skiddin'.

    Nice purchase and good build.

  • I'll definitely be playing with the saddle, although having it set back is quite good for reach, as I am quite long in the arm.

As for the bars. It's possible, maybe, I suppose, that I have put them on upside down. Doh.

But, given that the bars have just been taped and the brake cable has been cut, I'll ride it like this for a while and see how it is.

  • A few final tweaks, re-cabled the brake and raised the stem half an inch.

I'll ride this to @31trum on Sunday and then I'll know whether it fits or not!

  • Yes, it's too much seatpost, but man got legs, innit fam?

  • @mashton I've got some longer stems if you want to have a hunt through the cupboard of doom?

  • Thanks mate. I'll see how it is when I do some miles and get back to you.

  • I have a couple of rolls of plain black bar tape if you choose a different stem.

  • Again, thanks. I also need to decide on whether to flip the bars back up.

  • Did a few miles on it today.

I love it. I had forgotten how quiet and smooth a perfect chainline, steel, fixed wheel can feel.

I didn't have the balls to skid it. Yet.

  • Rode 40 miles today down to Horsham and a bit around town.

In general I love it. Nippy up and down hill, rolls beautifully on the flats and even quite whippy through traffic and quick turns. The slack angles aren't bothering me at all.

Could do with more hand positions but I'm happy enough to keep the moustachebars handlebars to go with my handlebar moustache.

I am definitely thinking that I will like it enough to get it repainted soon. Latest thinking is to keep it completely original, but with a touch of shimmer / glitter in the purple. I might also line the lugs in the same gold as the "F H Grubb" and "Galibier" lettering.

  • great to see you today, and what a wonderful bike you have.
    Al

  • Thanks Al! Great to ride with you.

The front wheel did go further into the dropouts when loosened and slammed down.

    Good thing I didn't die.

  • yes good thing you didn't, you handled it all superbly though, even down reigate hill..
i'll give you a shout when we head to brighton or box hill (gears or not)
    chapeau
