What are the handlebars? Cheers

Argh, why the good stuff always too small (for me)
-

It seems to me these were all really small! If anyone's tempted, it is cheaper on RB, and I mean, 115 posted is such a bargain, pity family members whom it would fit sizewise won't appreciate another 40yo ATB :)) https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/early-overbury%E2%80%99s-wildcat-1980s-fillet-brazed-frame-set-price-drop.479990/

Breezer are super nice. I have a 1995 Thunder but I'd love to have a Lightning one day.

After my bike was stolen last week I made the decision to do bring the 90s mtb into the 21st century. Now an atv/tourer, daily commute workhorse.
I was going to keep it as is, but I need a bike sharpish as I'm doing the Caledonia Way next week, and this worked out cheaper than a new bike.
I probably will look to upgrade the the gearing when I'm back. The 3x7 has no where near the range I'd have expected, so will probably look to change the back wheel (unfortunately) and make it a 2x9 with a bigger range of gears.Framebag, pedals and no name bars all from forum. Treated myself to brand new tyres, cambium and grips, and I'm glad I did, especially on the last two. What a difference a good saddle and grips make.

Instead of replacing the wheel could you get a 9 speed cassette and do an 8 of 9 on 7? I'm still running 3 x 7 and am happy with the range, but have considered doing this for better cadence.

I don't think I can. The hub is set up for 7 speed (30mm?) and there is no spacer behind the cassette can be removed.
I could go about replacing the free hub, but after all the work etc it's pribabjust better to source a new wheel with 8 speed + compatibility. -

Can´t mount other than 7 speed cassettes on a 7 speed wheel. From 8 speed on body width changed.

With a bit of luck you can find 8 speed xt hubbed wheels pretty cheap and these are extremely strong (and you can even run 11 speed mountainbike cassettes on them)

One of my tourer bikes built from a nineties mountainbike. I run an 8 speed LX groupset on it (22/32/44 icw 13-25 cassette).

My understanding of the 8 of 9 on 7 is from
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html
I assume the indexing won't work, so it's only possible with friction shifters. Unless you are prepared to change the shifters as well. And derailleur?!

what cassette does it have now - 11-28t? easiest option might be straight swap for an sram 12-32t? gives a useful extra bit of low end I reckon.

Didn't cassettes from 8 speed on use the combined sprocket tbing? Lowest 2 or 3 sprocket cogs made in one piece so these can't be seperated? Not sure for 8 but it definitely was used on 9 and later groups. Not easy to find loose cogs.
-

I thought 9 speed cassettes commonly have the 2 (or 3?) smallest cogs loose, the rest being combined as you say. You could install them without the second to smallest cog. The smallest cog needs to be present for the lock ring.

Pretty sure you can do this, have done it myself on a couple of wheels iirc

I thought the thing to do was use an 8 speed cassette and leave off one of the middle cogs.

Bloody hell that's a beauty!

Another find. A 1993 Trek 8700 (bonded carbon tubing in aluminium lugs).

That does work. I did the same and left off the 7th cog instead. Worked fine with an 8-speed shifter and the high/low limit screws properly set.
O, that's a great find. I'm looking for one of these myself (gift for my brother who raced the 1993 World Championship in Métabief, France on one).
