  • Just an ethernet cable, assuming it's connected to a PoE switch or has the adapter providing power to the ethernet cable.

  • Id get an injector then, nice and easy to run a single cable down the landing to it. Thank you

  • They come with injectors.

  • I'm thinking about getting a vpn for the house, mainly for getting access to BBC iplayer (I'm in Ireland)and different stuff on netflix , does anyone have any suggestions? I've only looked into a few of the biggest ones, and they all seem pretty similar

  • Netflix did a big crackdown on VPNs a while back. Not sure what it's like now, but I expect you'll struggle to access Netflix via a VPN

  • Yeah. I had a conversation with the guy that hit the killswitch. It's entirely their aim to allow no VPN usage whatsoever.

  • Iplayer is also a ballache via VPN.

  • NordVPN works fine with Netflix. Servers come and go so just connect to a fresh one when you occasionally suffer an issue.

  • Works fine on Nord in Hong Kong

  • Consider smart dns like unlocator, able to set up on more devices and free trial. If you want Netflix you’ll need to change your regional settings when logged into your account on pc/Mac to sign up to the beta.
I use unlocator on my router for all home stuff and NordVPN on all portable devices so I can be casual and carefree with public Wi-fi hotspots and work Wi-fi.
I have unfettered access to iplayer, itv hub, US Netflix, UK radio stations etc on all my mobiles, tablets, TVs and computers.

Issues: ITV went offline on Nord for one weekend in the last six months but was up and running after a three day blackout, unlocator remained online.
With unlocator you might need two or three attempts at triggering an iplayer stream, seems more problematic with the live stream than the on demand stuff.

  • I don’t believe that, they could shut down Nord/Express access quite easily. I suspect the IT people doing this are focussed on the free/dodgy VPN’s rather than the ones they use on their own personal devices.

  • I am just zee messenger. This is almost three year old information, too, for what it's worth.

  • With that said, worry-free iPlayer does sound good. I really miss English television. Like, a lot. We watch everything on our Roku based TV though, so it would be kind of annoying to have to plug my laptop in to watch stuff. Beggar's can't be choosers though.

  • $107.55 for three years. Don't mind if I do.

  • That’s where unlocator is good, just change the dns server settings on the Roku or router and ping them your IP (I use the iPhone shortcuts add on for this) and you’re done

  • Interesting...

I set up my own personal VPN on AWS and that got blocked at the same time as everyone else did. I was literally the only person using that IP address so I was surprised they blocked it, so I had to assume they just blacklisted all AWS IP addresses. For a while at least.

  • Are you using any particular server?

I normally use PIA but got Nord on a cheapish deal because it was meant to work fine with iplayer but I'd say it works 10% of the time if that (just using a random UK server).

  • I had a Digital Ocean cloud machine with a VPN and that was blocked too so I assume they just did all web services.

  • I set up my own personal VPN on AWS

How are you doing this - tunneling over ssh / openvpn / something else?

I run an ssh tunnel to an overseas VPS, but I'm looking to migrate to something a little more flexible, such as being able to change exit nodes without having to ask for a new IP

  • Normally just go with a random but mine has just gone down so looks like another round of cat and mouse. Normally resolved in a few hours. I’ll check unlocator when I get home, can’t use it now as I’m on unsafe Wi-fi.

  • I used Openvpn for my one on Digital Ocean, didn't take long to set up from what I remember. There are loads of step-by-step guides out there.

  • Unlocator is fine, hello new Alan Partridge

  • OpenVPN would have been the easiest option, but I wanted to watch forrin Netflix on my TV (which doesn't support vpn).

So I set up dnsmasq on a raspberry pi on my network and set that as the DNS server for my network. That allowed me to tamper with DNS requests for Netflix, and get them pointed to the ip address of my ec2 instance in America.

I can't remember how I set up the ec2 instance but it was basically just a transparent proxy, locked down to my IP address.

  • whats the go to VPN, missus has an account with HideMyAss, but it disconnects too often for my liking.
Would like something a bit more stable.
