I got 99 problems but my WiFi ain't one

  • It's not ducted tbh, just some cat 6 poked through and pulled down, but I could get a draw string ready for them potentially. My concern was that as I understand it fibre doesn't like being pulled round tight corners?

Other option is router in the left I guess, but there's no plugs up there and it's dusty/hot.

There is actually a pole at the back of our house, which clearly served our property once and would be more suitable. It currently serves a row of adjacent houses. Looking at the BT site they have full fibre available too, so I can only assume it's possible from that pole, but I know they wouldn't be keen as it's in a school ground so have to do it out of hours and get special permission etc.

  • fibre doesn't like being pulled round tight corners?

Correct, that's why some sort of duct would help as you can ensure that doesn't have tight corners.

Other option is router in the left I guess, but there's no plugs up there and it's dusty/hot.

The ONT is probably okay being a bit warm. Maybe run power over Cat5 with some splitters over the existing cable?

Getting the line run to a different pole is likely to be hard. I think that needs a network planner rather than the Openreach engineer that turns up deciding to do it.

  • The technician told me the fibre cable was installed by orange, so I’ll sign up for their fibre package and see if that’s an incentive for them to help me out.

Otherwise I’ll be re-reading this thread to get ideas on 4g routers and antennas.

  • We found that Movistar would put their fibre in if we took up their mobile contracts with telly etc. ... expensive for a year but you can cancel or downgrade ASAP.

  • run power over Cat5 with some splitters over the existing cable

Actually a great shout, and I already have a PoE switch, would be interesting to see how that goes down with the engineer though.

  • Thinking about this as I sat on my terrace, there is an electricity pylon and cable opposite about 200m away, wonder if this has effect!?

  • I'm thinking of getting a TP-Link Deco X20 pair but my router, the Now TV hub 2 doesn't have the option to switch to modem mode. Will it still be possible to use them together?

Now TV Hub 2 is the same as the Sky Q hub if anyone has a similar setup.

  • You could just leave the wifi of the now hub running, might just create extra noise.

  • I got these and they work good. App is good.

  • Guess what stopped working?

  • Fucking lol

  • That too. But more importantly my new shiny wifi. I hate stuff that doesn't work. Zero interest in trying to sort it out. Gonna ask for a replacement or a refund.

Main base station still works fine, the second one extending the network via cable is stuck in setup mode. Tried rebooting, tried upgrading, nothing works. Replaced it with an airport express. 10 years old and slow, but it just works.

  • So, my wired internet speed is 350Mbps. Wireless speed is 250Mbps near the AP but only 60Mbps at my desk which is right in the middle of my 2 APs.

Standard victorian terrace so floor plan is similar to this. Two wired Unifi APs at the red circles, my desk is right in the middle of them at the green circle.

Any suggestions on getting a bit more speed at my desk. The room does have wired ethernet but it's on the chimney breast so don't want something the size of a Unifi AP hanging off it and I can't easily trail a wire to my desk. Are powerline adapters (both ends plugged into mains extension cables rather than directly into sockets, wiring only a couple of years ofld) any good for speed nowadays? Any other ideas

  • why not just ethernet to the desk?
Can you get under the floor easily, or run a cable without it looking shit?

  • No easy access under the floor and in the room it would need to go round either patio doors or a door which would be very noticeable.

It's not a big enough problem to do anything drastic about, 60Mbps is generally fine, but a bit faster would be convenient for some stuff.

  • Knocking the wall through is the most obvious and sensible solution.

  • Are you using with a Now TV or Sky router?

@stevo_com is there a more efficient way of setting up without modem mode?

  • I was just thinking you could set it up as it's own wifi network while still leaving the wifi of the hub on (if you can't set it to modem only).

  • I reckon you'd need to disable DHCP on the NowTV hub as well. Having it running on modem and router may cause conflicts.

No direct experience but a quick google suggests that's possible.

  • Ah ok thanks. Arrives tomorrow so I'll have a play about, with a lot of googling as I'm totally clueless about this kind of thing.

  • Thanks, yeh I can see that there's an option to switch off DHCP in the NowTv hub settings.

  • Well that is clearly the issue but for some reason my girlfriend doesn't see it that way.

  • Is your computer connecting on 2.4ghz or 5ghz?
