  • I have a few aloes. One of them even lives outside

  • I’ve been growing some avocados and there doing well in water. I recently planted them in soil and they went all limp so they gone back into the water.

Do they need really wet soil?

My other avocado went in soil and it’s about 3ft tall now.

  • I have a moth orchid that's struggling, I've had it 6 months (didn't realise it was so long). Kept in bathroom for humidity. Recently moved it to the windowsill as I thought it too dark where it was, so it might be getting some direct shower splashing (not much) and a bit colder.

3 big leaves have died recently, starting from the top of the plant and working down, one by one. Each yellowing from the stalk. The third one this morning revealed black mould at its base around the stalk, I've pulled as much of that off as possible.

Everything I read says that most common cause of death is over-watering, so I don't much at all, but wondering if it's too dry or will it take moisture from the air? The aerial roots seem fine, the roots I can see down in the (clear) pot seem fine, both green/grey, but the roots on the surface of the bark are shrivelled and look 'burnt' (black patches).

I haven't fed it over winter. Should I?
I'm also considering sitting it in a shallow bowl of water for half an hour - I can use rainwater, tap water or boiled water (all left to settle to room temp). Actually I can run the dehumidifier for a bit and get some distilled water that way.

Any ideas? Is it a goner? It has 5 leaves left...

  • I’ve killed my fair share of orchids with too much love and attention.

I’d stick it back in the bathroom and try and forget about it.

5 leaves is still very alive

  • It's still in the bathroom just on the windowsill instead of a dark corner. I'm worried it's deteriorating rapidly!

  • This plant was doing well but it suddenly started dropping leaves …

It’s one of the mojito pileas …

Any advice? My current strategy is holding out until spring and hoping for the best…

  • If you compare my post from three months ago, you can see the situation did not improve. Is there two plants here and one has died? Should I dig up the affected one?

Looks like it - or maybe more accurately it is one plant (the two parts will share the same root system)

Should I dig up the affected one?

I'd rather cut the "dead" one, a few centimeters above the soil, with a bread knife for example.

  • Thank you. RIP.

  • Does anyone know where I could buy a sensitive plant in the city? Ideally south but at this point idc. They’re the little ones that leaves fold up when touched

  • Not sure if they'll have it but there's a houseplant popup in Spitalfields near where Evans Cycles used to be.

  • Also pretty easy to grow from seed. I bought some from the Eden Project, the kids grew it.

    Franchi seeds.. Mimosa Pudica

  • Lol I failed at growing from seed.
I’ve also killed mine. They need more water than ya think.
Try N1 Garden centre? Worth a call.

  • Avocado repotted and sprouting new growth.

  • My Instagram loves showing me people with crazy numbers of house plants, it always looks awesome but I don't know how they do it, watering, keeping them all happy let alone dealing with pests

  • That’s looking really healthy!

  • Stuck some chilli seeds (left) and cherry tomato seeds (right) in some soil and they’ve started to sprout. Chilli ones took ages and I gave up hope and forgot about them. Didn’t expect it to work in first place tbh.

Should I just leave just one sprouting of each to grow and remove the others?

chili seeds germinate fairly well, it happens more quickly if it's warm, could try putting them on the radiator next time

definitely, do it now, keep the healthiest-looking one, rip out the other(s).
your glasses look fairly small for plants like this, a (one) chili plant will do ok with this little room / soil, with the tomato I wouldn't get my hopes up too much (it will grow, but it will need a lot of water later, so you might end up watering the little glass 3 times a day : )

    keep us posted 👍

  • You could wait for them to get their true leaves (second set), they'll then be ready to move into their own pots and then you can keep them all.

  • Thanks both. Plan was to repot if they worked. Didn’t want big pots of nothing lying around.

KatBalou you saying re chillies, keep them for a bit and I can then separate them out and have 2?

  • Yeah, once the second set of leaves come you can move them into their own pots.

  • If you want to see how to do it, Monty was potting on chillies on gardener's world last night. You can catch it on iPlayer around 13 minutes in.

  • Perfect thank you, I’ll check it out. New territory.
