House Plants: Advice, Pics, Sell and Trade

  • Hi all, hoping to get some advice. Madagascar jewel plant (euphorbia) has gone real floppy and started to go yellow, and I'm not sure how to revive it. Conflicting information online about over/under watering it. My girlfriend gave it a feed with maxicrop recently, that's the only thing we can think of that's changed. Has anyone experienced similar?

Just in: girlfriend's dad's plant (much bigger, about 3ft) is doing the same thing - could be the heat? Although you'd think a plant from the tropics would be fine with it

  • Anyone who wants an aloe plant can come to mine and take a little baby from the side of the pot. It grows like a weed and I have tonnes of it.

  • Realise this may have been covered before but I have some unwelcome guests in the way of gnat fly's who are on my peace lily.

How do I banish them before they start on the rest of my plants?

I've tried an internet solution tonight vinegar, sugar and soap in a bowl cling filmed with a few holes. I'm not holding out much hope..

  • Nematode worms. I'm about to give my houseplants a good dose of them.

  • This also, I have some huge ones now that I don’t have space for really, but can’t bring myself to get rid of them either. Many many other none huge ones. Stopped repotting the babies a couple years ago. There would literally be nothing except aloe in my house if I carried on repotting.

  • Meanwhile, my aleo died a while back, I got it for a fiver from Tesco, it was growing so fast even in the winter, then it suddenly died so quickly and it was because the root was restricted by one of those mesh bag thingy. I am in the process of repotting all of my plants, even those that don't need repotting, because I want to get rid of those bags. So far, out of the 20 or so I have done, I have found about 6, only 1 that is almost completely biodegraded, the rest of them are really starting to restrict the roots. It was a total nightmare to get rid of them...

Think I will have to make it a habit to check whenever I buy new plants from now on.

  • Really pleased how these 3 tarro plants are going. Pick up 3 taro tubas from the vege Market wrapped them in damp paper towels for a week or so and kept them in the airing cupboard keeping them damp inside a bag. I really didn't hold out much hope but they sprouted and now tjis after about 3 weeks in the pots.

  • Kraft American Cheese slices as plant food? Smart

  • They love it :) who knew shite processed cheese makes ya plants happy 🧀😁

  • Avocado plant has really taken off since putting in a pot, but think I’m going to have to get a bigger pot.

  • Plant SOS. My wife brought this sorrowful looking rubber plant home from a dog walk, it’s had a quick repot and drink but I’m curious what others would do to resuscitate it? I’m not a fan of the crispy leaf look…

  • think I’m going to have to get a bigger pot

I'd leave it alone for the time being..
..the little cactus to the left might do with an upgrade though 😅

  • The notorious fiddle leaf fig I think. Fussy things. From memory, it mainly needs to be warmish and humid, so mist the leaves. I have killed a couple (mainly leaving them to go on holiday).

I don't think the crispy bits recover, sadly. You'll have to wait for new leaves.

  • Fussy…

Hmmm, bad start! I’ve done some cursory googling and they sound a pain, I give it two months of looking like crap in her office before it ends up in the green bin. Cheers anyway!

  • Picked this little guy up off the street. Its leaves keep yellowing and dropping… any ideas what plant this is and what I should do to keep it alive?

  • Rather raggedy looking poinsettia? That would be my guess.

  • Chilli plant?

  • My spider plant is making new plants.

My question is what do I do with them?

  • Fill your whole house with them!

If you mean how do you root them, it's super simple, wait for them to get a bit bigger then arrange them so they are sitting on some soil (while still attached to the original plant) and they will grow roots. Alternatively snip them off and put them floating in a glass of water.

  • 🙏👌

    Spider plant central..

  • My OH loves them, I think they look like a cabbage/collard green which is fine but don't really see the appeal as a decorative plant... We've got a couple, she keeps them in a shady spot outside and they do really well there...

  • Speaking of which, our spider plant has gone mental. If anyone in SE10 area wants one or a few baby ones let me know.

  • It does look like a poinsettia. I keep one by a southwest facing window and it seems to like it. The soil in yours looks a bit dry, no?

Shoutout to Picture This app. You can download the free version (beware annoying and sneaky attempts to get you to upgrade, note that there’s always an ‘x’ or ‘no thanks’ button somewhere). It’s not always accurate but it can ID plants and diagnose problems too.
