  • Here is my commuter which I think is pretty similar to what you're building, personally for me I would use SS over FG, but then again I'm a old fart who started to appreciate coasting:

  • It's nice to see proper distance commutes. Thumbs up. Should be a good build.

  • would you really recommend ss with discs over rim brakes and flipflop - i was looking at getting the flyer for the latter reason of being able to ride fixed? but Ive been in 2 minds that i may revert to getting disc option

  • V. nice, pretty much my dream build, unsure I'll get there soon though (combination of funds and the bike I've bought).

With regards to SS vs FG I’ve come to the same conclusion for this build, I can go with FG on the Pearson or choose to give my knees a rest.

  • here is something that will shock you, initially when I brought the NBD, it came with a surely free hub, I got the wheels rebuilt and converted to fixed, but after nearly killing myself riding fixed around the country lanes I decided to go back to SS again, but the surely fixed hub is still on but with a SS freewheel instead of a fixed wheel cog.

So long story short, get a surely fixed disc hub and you can run both single and fixed gear.

  • thanks i will bear that in mind - now to source new wheels to do the above

  • You can put a freewheel on any fixed threaded hub. It puts the same if not less strain than a fixed cog on the threads. No special hubs needed

  • thanks for the clarifying

  • All city were clearing stock on the old model Nature boy 853, you may still be able to order a frame.
That said I normally commute singlespeed with disc brakes, easier to handle around the barriers of the towpaths here and small offroad sections.

  • Got me home nicely.

First job, needs a longer seat post. Next, bigger tyres.

  • Upgrading my fixed gear commuter to a front disc has saved my life twice in the wet.

Nothing stopping you adding a disc fork if you want to upgrade to them - the front ends what really matters.

    @pjhobson Looks sick!

  • Oooo. Never considered that.

  • that looks so much fun, good job

  • ha - just saw the listing on ebay. dibs if it's too small ;)

  • Thanks, dibs noted :)

  • that escalated quickly!!

bargain though, deffo needs a nicer setapost, presume you have a long Thomson spare from your condor at the moment...?

  • No spare Thomson at the moment, want a 27.2 x 410 setback in black, nothing in the parts bin is setback. I have one on a different Condor which I'd happily replace with the same in silver, so the hunt begins!

  • Seatpost stolen from a different bike, now for tyres. Does anyone have recommendations? Not sure what I can fit, looks like 45c should be OK. Rims are DT Swiss RR 440, so 16/21mm inner/outer.

  • Update - I've come to the conclusion that the Roadrat is too small, shame as I really enjoy riding it. Next steps, find a frame to replace it with and move over components.

  • What tyres did you run? an update from me I got a day one decade on a bargain deal....it came with continental sportcontacts in a 37s

  • I'm still running the Conti Cyclocross tyres that came with it (37c from memory).

Genesis Day One - nice! Been looking at those and have come to the conclusion that they have similar geometry to the Roadrat (i.e. compact frame).

  • When you replace the frame make sure to put the fork the right way round - disc brakes go on the non drive side

  • Not on this frame it doesn't....

  • That's what I thought, until I road it for 3 minutes and encountered almost catastrophic toe overlap.

  • my mistake!

Why on earth would they do that?
