  • I'll probably needed to get a shorter stem at any rate. This one came with the handlebars so will serve until I can get on the bike proper to see how it feels.

  • Maybe just keep that higher and comfortable and work on lowering the front on this. CAADs are fairly aggressive race geometry so the two are not really the same type bike.

  • Yeah, figured this would be my smash it (haha) bike whereas the Croix de fer will be my commuting long slow mile muncher bike. Next project will be turning that into a 650b plush bike. Of course, once the screaming little swmlon arrives, that project will likely be dead in the water.

  • As this is my New York Mets build, where possible I'm trying to source orange parts where applicable. First stop, handlebar tape. My original plan was to go with the ever reliable and comfy Lizard Skins, but decided to try something new (and cheaper). Arundel Synth Gecko bar tape. I'm not 100% sold on the texture, but definitely sold on the colour.

  • Lets go mets ! looking forward to seeing this progress

  • I really rate it, good grip even when wet and very hard wearing (more so than Lizard Skins in my experience).

  • @Rich_G @bikes_knob Thanks. Yup, that's the look I'm going for. I'm wondering about Mets decals to put on the bike too. Did toy with idea of getting the team logo in lieu of the Cannondale badge on the headtube.
@andyp Good to hear, looking forward to trying something new.

  • As long as cocaine doesn't ruin the main components of your build, you should be ok. Unlike the 1986 Mets.

  • Cocaine served the '86 Mets quite well, so hopefully it will help this build ;)

  • Anyone have an idea of best place to source replacement chainrings for the 2010 Athena Carbon ultra-torque cranks? I was going to get a set either of TA or Stronglight, but there seems to be some chat about whether either are a perfect fit for this crankset.

    I think the Campagnolo part are FC-SR034 (34T) and FC-AT150 (50T)

  • I bought a TA 50t ring for my Centaur carbon UT cranks and had to machine down the tab that sits behind the crank arm. I don't need it now though. If you're local (London) you could see if it fits and buy it off me if you like.

  • Cheers. I think the cranks I bought comes with the TA, worn but still with life in them, which was for 10 speed but should work for 11 speed (he hopes). I just wanted to tart it up with full campaganolo. I think the previous owner also had to machine it down to fit.

  • Can't help with where (SJS perhaps), but they do need to be specified as Campag compatible: the position of the behind-the-crank screw is slightly different to Shimano spec rings.

  • That's the problem, even where they're listed as Campag compatible, the reviews are mixed between those who got along fine, and others who didn't. One reason why I considered biting the bullet on the Campag rings, at least then I know it won't be a faff

  • I wouldn't do it again tbh. "Campagnolo fit" will definitely include the slightly smaller bcd behind the crank arm but not always the difference in material thickness.

  • I see: I didn't know that.

TA are usually good quality (so I'm surprised they're not a good fit) and you'll pay a premium for genuine Campag (but be certain they'd fit). I'm sure Campag would argue that the shifting will be better with their rings.

It depends which you value more: value for money or form & fafflessness.

I'd take up dbr on his offer: if you don't like it, then it'll only have cost you a beer (I guess).

  • Will have to wait and see.

In the mean time, need to think about cassette options. Presently I've got a 12-25, but thinking the 25 probably doesn't give me a low enough gear for hills. The alternatives are 12-27 or go up to 12-29. I'm leaning to the latter because it's always handy to have lower just in case. My question is, does anyone know if the short-cage derailluer can handle the 29t or will I need to use the medium-cage? I have both so I guess I can just wait and see, but would be good to see if anyone has gotten away with the short cage and 29t combo.

  • What hills will you be riding? This isn't going to weigh a lot. I ride 11-23 on compact cranks and have yet to wish I had more at the top. I'm considering changing to 11-25 but so as I can use standard cranks

  • True, this will be lighter than the fully fat Croix de Fer I'm on now, but also considering my lack of fitness in general which is why I was thinking of getting the easiest gear on the back. For now, budget will probably force me into keeping the 12-25 and just gritting my teeth on hills.

  • looked into this recently with campag veloce as I was using a 53/39 chainset. loads of people online saying it's fine as long as you don't cross-chain. I just went with a medium cage derailleur though in the end.

edit: I was thinking in case i used it for touring - otherwise i wouldn't have bothered with 29.

  • I ended up building up a friends touring bike with parts lying around (50/34 to 12-29 I think) using a short cage believe and it hasn't killed him yet. Including a fully loaded weeks tour of Norway.

  • That's good to hear. There is hope for me yet. Now just need to find a good cassette. Might opt for Miche to save a bit.

  • Saddle sorted for now.

Any ideas of on script saddles for the build?

  • Right, I think I've found my bottle cages for the bike that is on point.
