Remember when I paid deposit for a Triton frame? It was delayed because of lead time on Spork 2.0.
I have no intention to do that kind of riding anytime soon. So I have decided to get an MTB instead of a road/audax bike. The money (in full) is already paid so I will be getting 'a bike' either ways.
I am an MTB n00b.
Should I just copy the geo of the new longshot Cotic Solaris Max in Medium (I am 170cm with 80cm inseam)?
Progressive Geo
140mm travel boost fork
148x12 Boost spacing
27.5 (because I am not that tall)
Clearance for 2.6" on 30mm-ish rims
3x bottle cage mounts and top tube mount for a bag (provision for offroad bikepacking)Does that sound sensible? cc/ @platypus @BareNecessities @t_w @Howard @Alb @TvH

Progressive is all very good, but how does the geo compare to the mtb you appear to be enjoying riding atm?

Lolwut
Does one (maybe two) MTB rides, decides he needs to upgrade ๐
You should get into Time Trialling too, then you could really burn the cash...

Excluding the fact that you're diving straight in with full custom titanium after a handful of rides, yes. Get internal dropper routing too. maybe some S&S couplers

Great question .. pretty much all of the usage will be London 'trails' .. Swinley, Bedgebury, Epping, Peaslake. I doubt I'll travel (fly, train) long distance with it, just a bit of offroad bikepacking. If I gain skills and go anywhere rowdier I can always just use a hire full-sus bike.

Haven't got any experience with Stantons, but I can't speak more highly of my Solaris MAX, easily the best hardtail I've ridden; fast, comfortable, and stable. I'd be tempted to stick with 29" wheels, if you're basing it on a medium the wheel size will be fine for your height.

Don't listen to Howard - the geo of a full sus bike will be wrong on a hardtail.
Also you're not too short for a 29er
You could do worse than copy a Solaris. It's very much a good all-round bike.

Oh. They have confusing names these days.
Still got too steep a seat tube for an all-day bike. ATMO

The real answer is ride a few different bikes first

You can get pretty rowdy with a 140mm hardtail

• #3145
More importantly though, bead-blast or polished finish?
-
• #3146
For the bottle cage/s?

• #3147
Mate, stick with the originial bivvy bike idea.

Can you get a test ride on a Bird Zero @ Swinley? Probably the easiest way of getting a feel for more progressive geo (vs. the Pinnacle), no? Sagged numbers are also worth a look esp. on long travel hardtails - can have a bigger effect on numbers than a lot of folks realise.
