  • so is everyone now using Resolut instead of Monzo?

  • Probably not, there's a single withdrawal, £200 per month limit for foreign currency.

  • So the most I can take out in forrun is 200 quid per month?

That barely covers one morning's drinking!

    Revolut any better?

  • Given that Monzo mainly appeared to be a rip-off of Revolut I'm not sure why it became so popular (other than the marketing of a hipster pink card).

I guess it did the tactic of offering unlimited overseas withdrawals for a brief spell to get the subscriber numbers up.

  • Do you know Revolut's limts off the top o' your scone?

  • Yep. Revolut is £200 too but you can have multiple withdrawals (£400 if you subscribe but it isn't really worth it).

If you're using it in Europe then Metro Bank current account has free withdrawals (and no charge for the account).

Halifax Clarity credit card is free for card payments worldwide (charges interest on cash withdrawals).

  • Hmm, none of those sound super but I'm passing all this to the missus so she can make her own mind up. Fox mentioned "Nationwide Select card (with 0.25% cashback) for fee free transactions abroad" which might be of use too.

  • Gotta be a current account person for that Nationwide thing.

  • I'm not sure how they were ever a rip off of Revolut.
Revolut's USP is that they allow you to hold balances in more than one currency at once.
Monzo never professed to allow you to do this, it just didn't charge for withdrawals abroad, which they do now.

I like that Monzo instantly updates when I spend money, I like that it categorises things automatically. I like the ability to freeze the card from the app if it's lost/nicked. I like that when I needed a customised PDF report for my mortgage that I could chat to someone on the app and got something emailed over the next morning.
So I see them as competing with high street banks rather than solely with other challenger banks.

  • Yeah, I have a Nationwide Select card. It's good. Can't withdraw cash for free but you can use it in card readers for free.

Which you can also do without a limit on Monzo. It's only withdrawing money that's got the limit, not buying things with the card.

I was thinking more in terms of this stuff which Revolut also does but didn't push as hard.

  • Depends. Think there's a limit on Monzo for withdrawals now before they start charging per transaction. I have one and have used in Europe but also have Halifax Clarity credit card which was good in America but it's slower to show up on a statement. Think both tend to give you the previous day rate once transaction is 'official'.

Sorry if this is less than helpful, I'm in the pub.

  • Do either Monzo or Revolut let you view the app on desktop, or export your transaction data?

  • No desktop version but you can download statements

  • Not sure about that scrolling graphy thingy across the top. Any idea what the point of it is?

  • also have a golden ticket if anyone interested.

    visualize spending over the month?

  • I think it's meant to project when your current account will hit 0 based on prior spending

  • Would have like to have seen they allow you to create your own categories or maybe even put some security on the app.

  • Is there any way to get on your account without a phone? Mine died today and I need to know whether a transaction went through or not.

  • Unfortunately I don't think there is, do you have a pad you could use? If not try contacting them, there are really helpful when I've spoken to them before.

    Sorry not much help

  • Nope. I messaged them on Twitter and they've said they're able to tell me whether or not it worked. Worried that I've bought 3 sets of hubs instead of 1.

Because when you're slightly short on money a broken phone and 2 useless sets of hubs are what you really need!

Edit: it didn't go through, phew. Your shit website saved me AliExpress. Still a bit annoying that there's no way for me to see how much money I've got in my Monzo account though.

  • I wonder if their uptake to convert into current accounts has been low. I'm getting almost daily emails, texts and phone reminders nagging me to upgrade my account.

  • This is not making me want one of their cards.
