Ah right, im number 18000 in a queue but I understand that’s for a current account and the prepay. They said I couldn’t just have prepay alone

How odd.

This might be of interest to you if you're planning on using Halifax Clarity:

Cheers, looks interesting. I'm about 27,000 in the queue though ...

So got pushed into the current account marlarky. Frankly don't see the point anymore. Not even simple top ups are available.
-
• #108
Oh, what happened to force that change from their end?
-
• #109
Not entirely sure what happened, just got a new card today, and logging into the app, there was a button at the bottom of the screen saying activate card. I did (partially my fault) thinking it was just a replacement.
The simplicity of the whole operation is now being eroded and it's pushing me away really.
The limits I can sort of live with as I have no issue with contactless payments.
The ease of top up even on bad reception really saved my bacon a couple of times, but now I have to top up from my banking app as opposed to directly from the Monzo app, knowing my banking app would make Alan Turing shit a brick I'm not keen on that. -
• #110
That sucks :/

Revolut seems the answer. Did pretty much all that Monzo did a year ago.

This current account business is being terribly handled. I logged into my Monzo app today to try to use it and I'm required to order a new card, submit some ID stuff, and wait for it to arrive before I can do anything. The app (and my money) is unusable until the new card arrives, and it sounds like I will lose a lot of the functionality I like, and gain nothing that I would value, from the new current account setup. I can't even access the Help area of the app, the only thing it will let me do is activate the new card that I don't have yet.
Further annoyance caused by the ID process for the new card taking multiple tries to get working, it didn't like my photo or something, and the system for taking a picture in the app was crashing it.
The main advantage of Monzo for me was reduced hassle and improved user experience, and this is now much more annoying than anything a proper bank have done to me...

• #113
Thanks for that, will look into it.
-
• #114
I should add, it also didn't give me any explanation of why I needed a new card and had been locked out of my account...I had to go online to find out.

I have for the current account to. Not crap that the top up is now harder.
Hopefully now I will be able to add the card to android pay wallet and use my phone NFC to make Monzo payments. Anyone know if this is supported?

Man, I didn't realise the tops up had changed so badly - that's possibly a deal breaker for me, doing that so easily was key to it being so useful.
I'm not going to change all my banking over to it, and it was very useful to have Monzo as my 'daily expenses card', which I imagine was a significant use case for their customers

I can use it via my phone so that is a plus over the pre pay card.
Luckily my main bank is Nationwide and the android app is excellent. It won't be quite as easy to top is it was before but that's ok with me. I'll probably setup a monthly standing order to Monzo.

• #118
I think we use it for the same purpose.
The top up has really soured it for me. if I don't have anything as concrete as full bar 4G or wifi, my banking app barely works. Also stops access if not updated, which happen without warning and needs full data to update.
To make it worse, logging in from a laptop STILL requires the App. I hate my bank but stuck with them a while. So yeah, deal breaker having to rely on my bank up....to top up another bank app...
I'm gonna continue using it, but I'm already exploring other options for daily use card. Monzo will remain my travel/fuel card. -

Switch to nationwide for your main current account. The banking app alone makes it worth while. Fingerprint login FTW.
So easy to do now as well. I do the whole switch from smile to nationwide whilst sat in a café waiting for a friend. Took ten mins tops.

Current account should work with Android pay already. The rest of the stuff that worked with the prepaid should be coming to the current account. I agree though, seems odd to move people over before all the functionality is there

You're right - I chatted with them just now and they confirmed the topping up will be a future feature. Not sure when...
That's probably enough to keep me on it for now. I picked up a revolut card, but their app seemed like a mobile phone game with in-app-purchases. Pay extra for a coloured card, pay monthly fees for different features, pay extra for delivery options...
I'm sure it's at least as good as Monzo and I could well be mistaken, but my immediate impression was that it wasn't as fuss free /lightweight.

Forgot all about this new Tandem card (cashback on transaction-fee free overseas spending) until they emailed me today. I've barely moved up the queue due to not playing their social media game. It's a reasonably innovative way of getting loads of free, targeted marketing but it doesn't quite sit comfortably with me.
Monzo is also pushing for a current account so looks like I'll be sticking with Halifax Clarity, Metro bank (ATM withdrawals in Europe) and Revolut for the moment.
Revolut was much more lightweight (and free cards) when I signed up to it, the extras all seem to have been added after I got my card and I hadn't even noticed them. It still works fine for putting money in and then spending with records of spend plus no transaction fees overseas (although only £200 overseas withdrawal per month which is annoying).

Why? I have the current account and was initially a bit miffed that they'd binned the Prepaid. But if you just treat it like a prepaid then what's the difference?

The removal of the top up from the app is annoying, and something I often do as I purposely keep a fairly low balance in my Monzo account.
Having to go via my banks app is a bit slower, and less doable at the front of a queue if you find you're out.
Other than that, I agree - so far it's the same as the prepaid.

It's better in some ways too, like being able to use android pay nfc thing. I haven't checked yet to see if I can do cash back. Anyone?
Actually I got "approved" for a pre pay last night.
All a bit odd.
I'm after this for the budgeting side of things so hopefully the new withdrawal limits won't bother me.
