  • You don't need an organiser to have a race. Smash it!

  • Might make the race better to watch tbh

  • A bit harsh - Jesse spent a bunch of money last year putting 3 film cars on the road and pushing it hard on social media!

  • Wasn’t having a dig at Jesse and his efforts! Just might make it more exiting with no coverage / not knowing. It’s kind of guerrilla racing.

  • Looks like some riders are still going for an unofficial ride anyway. Wonder if there will be a way to follow them?

  • Michael Wacker has taken that down now. He got a bit flamed on Facebook for using it to drive traffic to his own site, which seemed a bit harsh. But the official Maprogress tracker is going to be operating on an unofficial basis and there are 20-odd riders signed up on it. So basically it will be just the same as last year regarding dot watching!

  • Alright. Good luck with preparations for your ride @veganjoseph.

  • Samuli already posted it.

  • Maprogress? Is that what they used last year?

  • I stand corrected for being lazy :)

Yes. Here's the link to this year's:

There is talk of changing it to take the word 'race' out but they've not done it yet.

Sure. It will basically be like TABR now

  • Hey guys, I'm back from a rather wild week in Tenerife. Coincidentally booked almost exact same dates as some other cycling friends who were there so stayed with them. Got pushed quite hard!

First ride was fixed on 47/19 which was 100km from the place I was staying (Galletas, 0m elevation) to Santiago del Tiede reaching a max elevation of just over 1000m and climbing well over 2000m total. Woke up in the middle of the night after passing out from the ride and did a 40km night loop to test out the lights.

Then rented a road bike as a secondary bike. Did a rather vicious loop with almost 1500m of climbing in 66km. Next day did a rep of Teide all the way to the highest accessible piece of road (2250m). 3000m+ of climbing.

Another road bike ride the next day heading north-east exploring the less 'upward' roads. Still did 1300m+ in 75km.

Then things got spicy. Took on Teide on the fixed gear and got from 0m to 2200m in about 3 hours 30 minutes elapsed, 2:50ish moving. 41km of entirely uphill riding. 42/23 gearing going up. Carried all my own tools, change of gear, clothes, drink, etc. One of my mates filmed it so he'll hopefully have the video up soon.

Then after a lot of food and a big sleep I embarked on a fixed gear circumnavigation attempt with ~24 hours before I had to be at the airport (pretty much the start point) for my flight. 236km ride. Somewhere in the region of 4000m of climbing (iPhone says 7000m lol). Less than 12 hours moving, about 18 hours elapsed. Included a 1117m mountain pass. Was carrying literally everything I took away with me. Multiple changes of cycling and casual clothes. A huge backpack. It was very difficult but pushed on.

Will post some photos, more details and stats when I'm back from work... but I am feeling pretty confident that this race can be smashed pretty hard with a fixed gear now.

  • wow, you smashed that! I love the climb up to Santiago del Tiede where the island seems to change from dry and rocky, to lush vegetation. Got a Strava link/s?

  • Can find all activities and photos over on my Strava. Bear in mind the iPhone Strava app overestimates total elevation gain by 25-40%, although the elevation on the elevation/distance chart it makes is correct... never understood that.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Pawel Pulawski will also be riding/racing it fixed!

  • Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned but this will be where the ride / 'race' will be tracked from.

  • I wonder if, from a legal point (although I am not a lawyer), it would be better for all involved to run it as an ITT and just happen to arrange a group start, similar to how the Tour Divide, Highland Trail etc. operate.

  • Vegan food heads-up - I dunno if it's still Easter when you're riding but both Aldi and Coles do animal free hot cross buns as long as you avoid the chocolate ones :)

  • Well, I think that's what this is now. There's no-one officially organising it. Just the participants arguing to a route, really. The synchronised start time just makes it more interesting for those watching it unfold.

I think we are going to change the name to the Indian Pacific Wheel Ride too. Doesn't appear to have been implemented yet but probably should to save Jesse any future grief.

  • You could argue that the openness of an ITT keeps it interesting by allowing people to have a crack at it whenever they want, could keep a devoted dotwatcher entertained all year round... ;)

  • Isn't that what it already is?
