Backup plan if you don’t get in?
-

So, I didn't get through Stage One of the IPWR application. Turns out they ended up randomising the entries, which makes the lengthy application forms next to irrelevant... a day late too. Seriously disappointed with this. Not about not getting through, but about their process.

That sucks. Maybe you could look at other races... TABR, TCR etc?
-
• #806
TABR fixed might be doable.
-
• #807
They still might've looked at your application and THEN randomized the draw. It sounds like they read them all. Still sucks though.

Bad luck.
From what I know of Jesse all the entries will have been read. He's very thorough, well-organised and professional -

I've heard there's people that have got places for next year that raced this year and quit. Feels a bit shitty for me when the whole purpose of the application form seemed to be a determination of whether or not you have what it takes to not quit. Just my musings.
In the meantime, I just tentatively signed up for TABR. Didn't realise applications were still open. Wouldn't be doing it on fixed gear though. Further and more mountainous.
Will update if I hear anything more from the IPWR situation.

People bound to flake out last minute.. might not be the end of the dream

TABR entry closes in Jan.
Have you sent IPWR a message asking for reconsideration?
-
• #812
Have mailed them asking about whether the waiting list will be allocated on merit or random basis. Also reiterated the whole fixed gear thing.
I've tentatively signed-up for TABR. Would just need to send off my forms and payment - which needs to be done by January 31st. Should have heard from IPWR by then.

Last year, the entries re-opened after lots of people who had signed up initially dropped out.
But don't be surprised if you don't get an immediate response from IPWR as Jesse and Sarah are touring round Thailand.

Are any forumers racing? Going to be in Melbourne, might make a big do a skid sign...
-
• #817
I'll race... just as soon as someone pays for my flights and time off.
-
• #818
Okay guys, I'll admit it...
I made it onto the waiting list...
Waited patiently to hear back...
Heard back a few days ago...
Teased you a bit with my comment...
Because I was doubting myself...
But I guess I have to do this...

IPWR shopping list:
Need some stuff for the IndiPac race.
Carbon wheels. Ideally a wheelset, although will check out single wheels and have a mis-matched set if that's what it takes. Need clinchers with a braking surface. A rear which has fixed/fixed threading. 50mm depth would be nice but kinda open to anything. Would prefer at least 25mm wide external width - the wider the better. The more spokes the better.
Omnium cranks 165mm. BB not required.
Selle Italia SLR saddle. They seem to agree with my butt. If there's a slightly more padded version then that could pay dividends.
Bikepacking bags. Looking for something for the handlebars which will fit a bivy and some clothes. I think a 'gas tank' for the top of the toptube up-front might come in handy too. Show me what you got!
High quality lights. Will need two up front and two out back. Bright ones would be good. Definitely will need something bright enough to light the pitch black outback roads so I don't hit a kangaroo. Any light suggestions welcomed.
Reply / PM me with anything you have! Thanks!

Urgh carbon braking surface rims.
I guess it is one massive TT though and pretty flat so probably fine.Yes, see Selle Italia SLR XP (Xtra Padding).
There's probably 15 of them lying around here...I like Revelate bags and Restrap bags.
Lights: Exposure for battery, Supernova for dyno (I have nothing to compare this to but my Supernova E3 Triple F/R set has done 2 TCRs, TABR and everything in between, commutes and training, etc)

Doing it fixed (at least that's the plan) so will essentially have 3 ways of slowing. I know everyone's on the disc hype, and my next geared bike will have them, but for this I can't find a fixed frame that will have a disc brake attachment and allow forward/backward movement of the wheel to tension the chain - as I'll be using different gears. I was looking into the Trek Crockett frame but not really sure if it's worth it just to improve the braking when it will suffice using the Dolan FXE. I hope.
Will hunt for one of those then.. unless you're selling any?
Dynamo hub really worth the extra faff and energy? Or will keeping batteries charged up be even more of a faff? Thanks for your priceless info!

Would something like what HED do be an idea: ie alu rim with a carbon fairing.
Using rechargeable batteries seems like the worst option to me: you're reliant and dependant upon being able to charge them.
This article suggests an efficient dynamo will cost you up to thirty seconds over 100km when switched off and up to nearly six minutes switched on.
I suppose it depends on how long and where you intend to stop: if charging, I'd think you'll need a better planned and more rigid schedule. A dynamo would give you more freedom to alter your plans on the hoof.
Either way, congratulations on getting a place and props for doing it fixed (you can't back out now)!

I think the cotic roadrat (and the old escapade, they have changed it to vertical dropouts now though) would let you to run discs whilst allowing you to run two different cogs. But you're right, probably totally unnecessary.
