  • huh we're not talking about sponsorship.
we're talking about 3rd party support.

And the line is grey for the masses, but black and white for each person.

  • Posting comments about where a rider is or what they might be doing could be considered assistance to other riders in some people's eyes. Basically unless all discussion about the ride is stopped then it's an irrelevance. It's riders asking for help online, summoning trail angels, that is the purpose of the rule. ie. if a rider asked where he can find food and I told him there was a cafe 100k ahead that would be rendering outside assistance. Offering unsolicited advice on any aspect of the race, specific to a rider or not, is not outside assistance.

I've probably mentioned Voltaren already so it could be argued that it was freely available information to any rider anyway if you wanted to get fussy about it. If I'd PMd him with details or how to cook up your own batch of Volteran that would be different... and very tricky to prove happened unless he shared that PM. (there was no PM).

  • I get that. I wasn't saying you were offering assistance, more just a warning to all.

  • If Joe is upset by me regurgitating information that is already available he can let me know. The fact he's on the IPWR thread though means he's got outside information already. I don't believe there's a grey area, the rules are simply meant to stop riders asking for help and getting it along the way (ie. when Donnacha self-DQd for asking something for help on Facebook), not to stop comments from the entire world on the races.

  • Turn right after the Muur, skinny!!

    oops DQd

    :P

  • Race hasn't started yet.

But if I see someone pushing you up the muur you're in trouble.

  • Labour of Sisyphus?

  • If you see me on the Muur, YOU'RE in trouble :P

  • Joe is going to be in an area with no phone coverage for the next 12 hours so by the time he reads this, if he ever does, his knee will either have blown up or got better!

Unsolicited advice is the essence of supporting a sporting event. It's what people in football stands shout. If that was not allowed, people would lose interest.

  • pushing you up the muur

    Euph?

  • She said she was clean...

  • Down in front!!

  • Had to google that. Pretty much hippy.

  • I roll down the other side though. So there's that.

  • You can't. Skinnyphus has to let go just before the top and you roll down again.

  • I was thinking about this too, as there's people telling what to do on Stephane's Facebook page too, but he is not asking for any advice either. But commenting is part of this all.

  • People should know better is my opinion. I know on the facebook group forTCR admins would give guidance and remove stuff that could be seen to infringe.

  • This doesn't take place in a vacuum, in real life there are not always admins to enforce rules!
I think you are drawing the line in the wrong place, specifically for this event which does not exist so has no rules, and generally for all events too.

  • I didn't draw a line, I just brought it up 'be wary'. As a reminder.

This race has all the rules of any other race. It might not be written down or signed, but anyone racing knows what they are, as do you, I and everyone else.

I have strong views on what counts as assistance. I don't to things that I see and hear of other racers doing, that's my choice.

  • For example in TABR fb group and among the racers there seems to have been some that are not really playing in the spirit of unsupportedness and that's disturbing. But maybe these races are just so new to most people that they need example so it might be good to be overly cautious.

  • It's a pretty stupid rule if you can't ask for advice. It's not like there are people at the roadside with painkillers, front wheels and a bowls of spaghetti.

Jesse himself said he didn't even care if people back in the bunch drafted each other - it's the front of the race that matters.

  • Jesse himself said he didn't even care if people back in the bunch drafted

    Source?

  • Probably youtube interviews. He definitely talks about the backmarkers forming pelotons to support each other and the 'racers' are long gone and self-policing anyway whereas the 'finishers' are just fighting to survive.

Talks about rules around 12min https://youtu.be/atgybRLy4ts

  • The actual rules were:

    No drafting.
Inevitably a rider may travel at the same pace as another rider. When riding together riders should ride side-by-side.
Riders should recognise that riding in a group, even when not drafting, is significantly easier than riding solo. Riders will be asked to declare the extent of group riding after the event and this data may accompany the final results.

As mentioned in the rules, riders may be asked to declare the extent of group riding and this data may accompany the final results. A final result may not matter to some riders, but please recognise that some riders battle for 33rd place just as hard as a those riders battling for victory. Please allow them to race in the spirit of the event.
