  • they were saying Citroen own the rights to the Ultra Torque linkage

Seems unlikely, Andre Citroen died the same year as Albert Hirth :)

The reason why PT is much cheaper than UT has nothing to do with patent fees and everything to do with cost of manufacture. Straight splines are really cheap to make, Hirth couplings are really expensive. That's why you see splines on automobiles where the fact that they are bulky, heavy and imprecise is easily outweighed by how cheap they are, and Hirth couplings in aviation gas turbines, where small radial dimension, light weight and tight control of runout are critical.

  • For some UK pantographer. Look up pantograph bike parts on Facebook. It's a group and you can message him. His work looks good.
And also pista resistance on Instagram for your polishing needs.
Finally we have a complete UK solution to compete with cyclo retro in Australia.
Should save someone some postage hopefully.

  • Have made some (very slow) progress on this.

LBS fitted the Power Torque Crankset:

And I have built myself a wheelset; Open Pro's on Ambrosio Zenith Hubs:

Just need to get a few bits (Cassette, Chain, Cables) and this should be on the road pretty soon.

  • Just come across this thread.
    So much good stuff

  • L'eroica is coming up fast, so got my finger out, and got this on the road today:

The biggest problem I encountered was that the forks were built with a proper vintage steerer tube, which appears to have some mad ID, somewhere around 21.5mm, and I've had a lot of trouble sorting out a stem that fits.

At first I assumed it was French, so bought a stem on E-bay.fr.

However, that didn't work, so I resorted to filing down a stem I had in my parts bin - I think it's from an old Dawes.

Subsequently the stem is too short, and the bars are too narrow, but it works for now.

If I have the time, I will sort something better out, but at least I have a ride.

Downtube shifters are the Dia Compe ones designed specifically for 10 / 11 speed groups, and so far they seem to work well with the Potenza front and rear mechs.

Have done a few test miles today in the South East London Alps, and all has been fine. Hope to get out to Kent next weekend.

  • Will it get the brifters fitted at some point?

  • Yep, soon as I get back from Tuscany.

Much as I love a classic bike, brifters make like so much better.

  • Awesome. No pictures with them fitted yet then? Look forward to seeing it

  • I've not even taken them out of the box yet!

  • Had a chance to fettle with this yesterday.

When I got the frame back from the painters, I took it to my LBS to have the steerer cut and the headset fitted.

Unfortunately, they didn't cut the steerer quite enough - probably less than a mm too long, but nonetheless the top nut wouldn't screw down far enough to engage with the locking washer:

So, with an appropriate amount of trepidation, I took the fork out of the frame, and clamped it in a vice; turns out my hacksaw game is 'on point':

While I was about it, I took a half-round file to the inside of the steerer tube, and removed a bit of material, just enough to allow me to get a 22mm stem in there.

The next issue was that said stem, a vintage Mavic stem, needed 25.4mm bars and therefore couldn't take your standard Cinelli 26mm bars. After a bit of a forage at the back of the garage, I re-discovered and old set of Witcomb branded bars, so had a bar / stem combo that would work:

Pissed about for ages, trying to set up a pair of old Chorus levers, but just couldn't get them to work properly, so gave up and went with Shimano. Not ideal, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out:

I think it's about ready for L'eroica now. I need to add bottle cages, and I might swap out the Ritchie seat post for something with Campagnolo engraved on it, but other than that, I'm done.

  • a vintage Mavic stem, needed 25.4mm bars

Seems odd, what with Mavic being French.

Could the Cinelli bars you tried have been 26.4mm?

  • odd, what with Mavic being French

All bets are off with the cheese eating surrender monkeys. They seem to flip-flop between international and domestic standards on a whim, depending on market conditions and, for all we know, how they feel about les Rosbifs on any particular day.

  • Fair enough and the gap in the clamp looks OK.

  • Here it is, in the Tuscan 'jungle'.

  • The amount of talent in this forum never ceases to amaze me

  • Still waiting on the full modern build with brifters!

  • Give me a break, I'm still in Tuscany (just).

    Will brifter-up at the weekend.

  • The golden stem
    works really well on this!

  • I'm still in Tuscany

    Give me a break

    Sounds awful

  • Back in England now :(

  • And yet, still no pics

  • Got up especially early this morning.

Hope you are happy now ;)

  • Absolutely stunning.

I love your Stockton head badge. Is that a custom decal?

  • Yep,

I had the decals made by H Lloyd (before they sold).

Head Badge is an 'homage' to Witcomb, as they were my local builder and are responsible for getting me into this bike shit.

Down tube decal is an 'homage' to Roberts, as it was with the guidance of Geoff Roberts that I built the frame.
