  • Rapha is seeking a full-time Junior Copywriter to join its Central Marketing team. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic young writer with a passion for cycling.

Working across our brand and communications teams, the successful candidate will need relevant experience of producing copy for emails, product descriptions, and day-to-day communications. He or she will, ideally, be fascinated by the sport of road racing, understand the values embodied by Rapha, and want to create engaging and inspiring content. The role will require the ability to move effortlessly between several disciplines of writing, from journalistic features and interviews to marketing copy and creative writing. Supporting a global brand from London, the central marketing team is often required to provide solutions to urgent creative challenges, both big and small, and the junior copywriter will be a key part of this process.

The role will report into the Head of Copy.

    THE ROLE

    Writing new product descriptions
Writing ‘story labels’ for new products
Writing bulk of Friday newsletter communications
Supporting RCC & Clubhouse brand and communications projects
    Supporting regional event communications
Responding to urgent copy requests from the wider business

    THE CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

    Degree-level qualification or equivalent
Previous agency, journalistic or brand experience
A knowledge of cycling past and present
    Exceptional attention to detail
The ability to excel in a fast-paced working environment
    Sound organisational and time-management skills

  • This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic young writer with a passion for cycling.

You might want to consider your compliance with the Equality Act. To quote Age UK:

When advertising a job role, employers can’t include age limits, and should avoid using words which could suggest they are looking for applicants from a particular age group – for example, by using terms such as ‘10 years’ experience’, ‘enthusiastic young people’ or ‘ recent graduates’.

To be clear, this isn't optional. The Equality Act makes discrimination on the basis of age unlawful.

  • Could also be a vacancy soon for the person who writes the job adverts...

  • The role will report into the Head of Copy.

    lolz

  • "While the Equality Act 2010 protects you from age discrimination at work or when applying for a job, there is an exception in the law which applies to age discrimination only.

The exception means that an employer can make a decision based on someone’s age if they can show that it is objectively justified and proportionate. This should only be a defence in a limited number of circumstances and doesn’t mean that employers have ‘free reign’ to discriminate against older workers."

IMO Is easy to argue that a junior role for a company like Rapha would need a young persons perspective to compliment the existing well established voice to the Middle Aged Men in Lycra, which make up the majority of Raphas customer base. Millennials are notoriously difficult to pin down on what they actually want from a brand. Appealing to this demographic would almost certainly call for a recent graduate in their early 20's.

  • LOL

You seriously think that would stand up? If they are trying to attract MAMILs why not employ one? They already have lots of young employees, so they've already got that perspective.

I think you'll find this is more that they think the job would be beneath an older and more experienced copywriter, but age doesn't necessarily tally with experience.

That or they don't think an older person's face would fit. I'm sure it's not that of course...

  • IANAEmpolymentL though

  • MAMILs

    where do I sign up?

  • I'm pretty sure the salary will govern the age of most applicants.

  • What does it pay? I got rejected for a copywriting job at Rapha last year, FWIW. Hoho!

    I cn'at imagnie why.

  • All brands are trying to attract millennials. Rapha already have the MAMIL market locked down. Ergo they need a young scribe who knows how to communicate in the vernacular of the most wet ass entitled bunch of whiney snowflakes ever committed to this sphere of underwhelming decline.

Also I bet this pays gross 17k which is what 40 something professional copywriters spend on private school fees.

  • Or whatever, am bored and hate all this politically correct nonsense. If you want young people with a good degree fine, I would rather they said that and not apply, than apply and have to turn up dressed like this:

  • Buy R stuff m8

  • Fam our shit lit AF. Chartruese up in your biscuits.

  • quoting friends is so un-cool man ..

  • I tried this line with a local establishment when they ran a similarly 'age' worded add for their establishment saying they wanted someone between two ages. They gave me a right kicking and told me I was destroying their business.

  • Noted. * doffs cap *

  • Don't think theres anything wrong with saying young, if the listing is for a Junior role. I imagine there aren't many 30+ Junior Copywriters.

At least they didn't do the usual, Junior role + 'Must have 5 years experience in the exact same position'

  • All brands are trying to attract millennials

    Why? They've got no money!

Credit card companies love them I suppose. Maybe that's why...

  • Ergo they need a young scribe who knows how to communicate in the vernacular of the most wet ass entitled bunch of whiney snowflakes ever committed to this sphere of underwhelming decline.

Ha. Judging by how much millennials on here love Rapha (half of them work there) I'd say I'm not sure they need it but I know they have ambitions to be a fashion brand not a cycling brand so I guess that's true.

  • I think the OP means young looking. Flat chested.

  • I cn'at imagnie why.

    Two oldd.

  • Milo Yiannopoulos is a millennial ..
