• I think that's called a moat

  • who is the house contents insurance with?

  • You might well be wildly under-insured with that little cover... Apparently 'contents' means everything that isn't part of the structure and not just things that someone would/could steal. So things like heating system, kitchen appliances, bathroom suite, bedding, carpets, bookshelves, etc etc.

  • doesn't cover bikes over £500

  • "as soon as we have the report from your LBS we'll issue a cash payout"

In situations like this, would the insurer then try to reclaim the payout from the driver's insurance?

  • If the driver was known, yes.

But in this case no, it's just a payout and they take the hit. I've paid my premiums and am in good-standing, it will add to my premiums a little but they've already advised it won't add much at all.

Frankly though, this is what it's there for. I've paid those premiums for ages so that they'd step in were something big to happen... like losing an expensive road bike in a hit and run.

    Update:

    • Road rash nearly all healed, scabs starting to flake
    • Knee finally scabbing up and is now exposed to the air as it's stopped bleeding over clothes
    • Finally managing stairs, I notice a few aches in the right leg still
    • Police have still done nothing at all to date, and still have not contacted me
    • Bike has been written off and insurers have pre-agreed to pay out
    • I'm dreaming of a new bike https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/297404 which is stopping me from being really devastated about losing the bike I loved the most

That was a not-so fun week. The biggest relief were the insurers for feeling like an understanding and sympathetic friend rather than a corporate entity. The difference that makes when everything else is a nightmare is huge.

  • Glad to hear you're recovering well and that the insurance policy has you covered.

  • You missed a great forum ride to, which isn't to rub your nose in it but more to point out a positive from your hard work.

  • Sorry to read this @Velocio - just catching up after a couple of months off.

Hope all is good and you're getting better.

Sad news about your bike. But hey - theoretically it's all replaceable. Limbs aren't. Yet.

  • I'm basically healed up.

Week 1: Bleeding and road rash healing.
Week 2: Bleeding stopped, major meat area around knee starting to scab, road rash healed.
Week 3: Could finally bend leg enough to do stairs, lots of false-starts on knee healing. Yellow leg from bruising.
Week 4: Everything healed over, just a big purple area from thin skin under the knee.

The police are useless and have basically said that they are doing nothing at all.

The bike will be covered by insurance, but of course it means higher premiums in the future.

  • Prawns in air vents time?

  • Whizzed up fish guts made into ice cubes...

  • Or if it's a convertible, grass seed on the roof.

If the owner has a garden then I know a man with a particularly aggressive strain of Japanese knotweed...

  • I'm glad you've recovered well.
I am VERY ANGRY at the Police inaction.
I am not surprised, but you knew that.

  • For an incident of this nature the police have about £600 allocated to it. It's about £6000 for a fatality I think.

We have a collision, no witnesses or CCTV, a car that fits the description nearby. What does Johnny Law do?

  • £600 worth of time would be a start.

  • I've probably had £600 worth of time.

I imagine just me pestering them, filing the forms, them reading and transcribing them, contacting me via phone, etc... that the time, plus desks, equipment, space, etc... it's probably already hit £600 without them doing anything.

I'm resigned to that now being the case, and would still rather now focus on the insurance and new bike.

The energy I was going to expend for chasing the police has been spent, 2 police stations, several phone calls, many emails, photos of the location and suspected car, gathering of witness details and forwarding that info.

I'm going back to work tomorrow, and what energy I have now will go to the new bike.

  • At least put a dog poo in their radiator

  • Dunno if this is accurate, in 2008 the police had £60 to devote to a Slight injury, £259 for Serious, £1963 for fatal:

  • Just caught up on this. Pleased you're healing well, RIP serrota, but horrified by the lack of action from the police.

You need to escalate the police not turning up at the hospital as a formal complaint. I also suggest that you locate the borough commander for the incident area and contact their office directly for a response, asking why are the police not acting. (We've had more response to asb complaints and police inactivity by going through this route than any other method). http://content.met.police.uk/Page/YourBorough

Hope 2017 is better for you in all areas x

  • ^ Word.

  • I missed this thread. Horrified to hear of the driver's behaviour and the police's lack of action. Glad you are healing but very sad about the Serrota. Beautiful bicycle.

  • What are you doing with the old frame? I'd ride it ;)

  • The old frame is dead. Large crack found right across the top tube.

  • That's a shame. I knew it was a cautionary write off but that's not stopped me before.
The new build will be awesome though. Hanging the serotta on a wall or is it going to landfill?
