The soldering iron of doom. You could use a hot nail or something instead if you don't have one of these.

Thanks. I used a piece of the rack hardware to mount the light a little lower as the bag rested on it. That's it for now, test ride tomorrow!

Can I ask you why this is so much better than the Ortlieb Klickfix system?

Can I ask you why this is so much better than the Ortlieb Klickfix system?
You can but I don't know. If there's other/better ways to achieve a (large) QR front bag I'm all ears! This thread is just about documenting my ramblings.

How are the brakes holding up?

They're great, thanks. A bleed and some new pads and they became good as new.

This is great! What direct mount stem did you go for?
-
• #41
Thanks! It says specialized on it, that's all I know. Got it used from someone for around £15. Most direct mount stems I found are irritatingly expensive or not a two piece design. The thomson one in the radavist link in my first post is especially expensive.

And here, some decaleur porn in these flickr pages:

All these new finds are giving me a headache! But todays ride into work went very well. I am growing increasingly annoyed at the poo coloured bartape I used on the bike though. Will have to serve its purpose until spring as I think it'd be wasteful to rewrap purely due to aesthetics, especially on a commuter. Ah well, first world problems >>>>>>>>>>>>>
Will update later with some proper pics of the bag on the bike in daylight, if I can make it home from work before nightfall (around 3 pm here atm)

Added a tasteful reflective patch to set me apart from the nodders on my epic 5km commute.
I also took delivery of some alu brazing rods I'd forgotten about. May have to start experimenting on a custom rack after all!

Going to give this a go. Got a standard Bigxtop rando bag that uses the Rixen Kaul QR bracket, but it's too high and too far from the bars for my liking. Have ordered one of these:
a set of these:
and a pair of these in the longest length to reach the mudguard eyes on my forks:
Will hack the back off the QR bracket - one of these:
and bolt it to the upstand of the rack. Might need a riser to lift the block to the right height. Then use the rest of the bits to fix the rack in place. The legs on the rack could be too close to the fork so I'm prepared to cut them off and use some P-clips to fix the brackets from the rack stay set to the front of the rack. -

Excellent! Post lots of pics.

Too dark for pics, but making good progress on the front rack. Have cut the legs off the rack and fastened the mounts from the Axiom set directly to the underside. The long Tubus stays just about reach the mudguard eyes - depending on the final height of the rack I might need to make some spacers to bring the mounts down a bit.
I've cut the back off the handlebar mount and I reckon it'll be in about the right place if I bolt it straight to the upstand on the rack. Looking good so far.
