Its not just the width but also the height, my 60mm GB mudguard (700c) clear the 60mm 650b tyres with ease because of the height clearance.

What has your Elephant forks to do with the Surly forks on this one.. ?

Hey @jambon, just wondering what the tire clearance is like in the back for a Croix de Fer 650b conversion. You think it'll fit the WTB Horizons (47mm)?

With my 42mm Compass Grand Bois at Max psi here you go, I'd say there's about 7mm each side. Hope this helps.

That’s slightly more clearance than my custom 650b!

Nothing, just saying that if there’s enough height, you should be able to fit those tyres/mudguard combo

Thanks @jambon. Definitely think the 47mm WTB tyres will be a bit tight!

I got them on mine with 25mm wide rims and 2/3mm clearance depending on pressure

There’s a Day One with those tyres, you should be fine.

No real update other than enjoying Spring. I think the next step will the low rider mounts for front panniers and probably going to a double chainring set up to account for the extra weight.

Compact chainrings and front derailleur on although considering having done with it and fitting a mtb chainset for when I get panniers/bags. Rear cassette is 11-32 and seen a 36 is possible but currently don't use the big chainring (34/50) much at all.

I am doing the @Lolo special 6600 cranks with SPA chainrings, most likely 46/30.

What at the back?

Yeah, those chainsets can be had for really cheap! How much did you spend on it? What the three hells are you building now?
For extra monies saving, just get the ring and angle grind the big ring down. Used to do it at work when customers just flat out wanted the chain-sets thrown away during upgrades.

@Chak thanks a lot, do enjoy riding this one. Can't help feeling a sub compact might not be enough fully laden but will test this before spending any money. Did enjoy the simplicity of 1x and the jumps between gears were fine which makes me think Wolf Tooth road link might be worth trying.

Honestly, I think 46/30 work well for you especially with a load.

Having said that it's probably cheaper to go for wolftooth/wheel manufacturing drop out extender and run a 11-42t with a 40t chainring.

I do know what you mean though. I'm about to install an MTB crankset. Steel bike loaded, with really rocky/scree terrain makes for sketchy work climbing.

@edscoble I'm running that with a 44 up front. Sometimes you do need the smaller ring if you want to climb seated. 46-30 would be the sweet spot.

I want something like that SRAM double MTB chainset that have 42/28 which is spot on, very hard to find an MTB double that go more than 40t in the big ring.
