  • I had nothing to fix it at home so I took it to work today. We have a hydraulic press. I stuck it between the plates and went to town.

Bike is resurrected and feels fine. Will avoid hopping off things for a while. Thanks for all the help.

  • So you had a hydraulic press at your disposal all along?

    Lolz

  • If you are still thinking about a fork, and this fits, it's still available

  • Yeah, was desperately trying to fix it at home so I didn't have to tube + train to work in the morning.

And guess what, the train was cancelled this morning.

@Bernhard thanks, even a colour match! Will keep you in mind if I am in need

  • Well, now we know who to come for all our hydraulic pressing needs, lol! Glad you got it sorted...

  • Wheres the fun in using a hydraulic press, thats like cheating, :)

  • nice one, that's a great result!

  • I used to work at a place that had a hydraulic press. It had an adjustable steel screw-in foot that was about two inches in diameter, for pressing small work. I overdid it trying to press a shape into a piece of metal and I bent the foot... a short cylinder of solid steel two inches in diameter, bent like a boomerang. I was scared to use it after that.

  • Yeah, they are super scary. The press at work isn't a big one, it's just for die-cutting. Even so, I have buried 500 x 500mm die tools inch deep in the bottom press surface. And once they're in there it's no small job to get them out.

When I used it on the forks I didn't even turn it on, I just rested the top plate gently on the steerer to clamp it. Reckon if I had tried pressing it I could have crushed the steerer tube!

  • You'll love the bit when the hand goes in around 3:30
