AZ leading, no surprise. Wonder what he's capable of here.

• #2455
I didn’t follow the Indy-Pac to know if he can hold that pace for the duration? Matthijs seems to be riding as fast or slightly faster, but with a sustainable routine. It’s a bloody long race!

Right, asking the obvious questions again (because I can't see them answered on the race web-site): What's the green route? An option for people to avoid Kansas (where bad crashes have occurred)?
Only six women, although I can't remember how many did it last year. Still a long way to go in that respect!

Also, the rules still say 'any bikes allowed', presumably not intending to be literal about it, i.e. whether trikes are allowed. There doesn't seem to be an HPV rider in it this year, does there?
-
• #2458
Green is indeed an alternative to avoid Kansas. No velomobiles this year. There is a tandem now.

He did on IndyPac pretty well. Was almost at Kristof's pace for the first couple of days, then a few hours behind it. From memory, fairly close to Mike and Sarah (although he probably had better conditions).
Matthijs has had to pack or slow down on most of the things he has done so my money would be on Abdullah being more likely to go the distance. -

Thought last year's race might've attracted more HPV racers. Interesting with the detour option.

"This year's race could be dominated by the weather, with floods and road closures plaguing many sections of the route. McKenzie Pass – an iconic section the leaders hope to clear on the first night – is still partially closed due to snow and repair works after fire damage last year, forcing a 17-mile diversion."
-
• #2461
what's the green line about?

• #2462
Abdullah did incredible on IPWR with only a year training (?), With a weightlifting past. Coming into TABR with better prep, he could be looking to set a record perhaps? Will be interesting as it's still his first shot and Evan took a few goes to get faster each time. Hope Abdullah at least goes the whole distance. And of course there are other riders who will appear too.

Detouring around KA.
"At a T-junction somewhere in Wyoming, riders will have the choice to turn left and venture through Nebraska along the Mormon Katy Trail or continue right along the classic route into the mountains of Colorado. It'll be interested to see which route riders take and whether there is an obvious advantage to either."

set a record
If they are bypassing McKenzie it's already on a different route so it'll be one of those * records.
-
• #2465
Because of people cars?
-
• #2466
I think he's providing an alternate route as he views KA as too dangerous.
-
• #2467
True. Lot of flood damage through Kansas also. Actually doubt he'll get close to Evan's record, but he seems able to put in huge miles.
-
• #2468
Yep, I was very impressed with his IPWR.

• #2469
Not bad

Yeah, only 6,100k to go...

• #2471
true.

• #2472
90 mile gap now for AZ
-
• #2473
Impressive, though he's been riding for 20 hours since his last stop. Others are likely to be clipping in again shortly and I imagine he'll need to rest soon. There's some tricky terrain between them so it's a decent gap.

Just learn your 5/8 times table!
What else would you think about when riding long stretches on your own if you weren't able to convert all the distances and back again...?
I really enjoy reading other riders reports too, especially the ones I bump into during the race. It's really interesting hearing all the hidden thoughts and background stories that I'm not aware of during the race.
Jason Oestreicher has just started publishing his too. https://mightysquirrelhunter.wordpress.com/2019/01/04/2018-trans-am-bike-race-the-prelude/
