Lochsa was very cold last night. Wearing almost everything I had.

Slept in toilet. Not bad. Clean and warmer than outside. No bears either

Gooch is ok, knee on and off, as it's Achilles.

• #1656
Correct. Possibly my wrong saddle height changes or more likely sock rubbing tendon - same as last year but other side!!

Only coz I couldn't find the hotel... ;)

Did she not return to her deviation point?
-
• #1659
Looks like she's carried on down into the valley rather than back tracking. Miserable mistake to make, shooting down the wrong descent.

Guessing it'll warm up the further SE you get, this is the second year of a drought in the middle of the country. Dry as a bone here and I've got the AC on at midnight.

She's on some dirt track now

Did she not return to her deviation point?
Not yet.
Is that what the rules dictate? It's not clear from the ones on the TABR homepage.

Ooof:
Wisdom is taking the correct left turn.

Yes. One continues route by pedal power.

Ouch

I reckon Marcel Graber, the velomobile guy, will take the lead either today or tomorrow. Michael Rushton has been stopped for 12 hours after a short day of riding.

Blimey, and she was going so well. Shame.
Am I right to assume that the line of when she went off-route is so straight because she was going faster?
Simone Bailey hasn't passed her yet, but is very close. It could still be interesting between them.

And she continues to make weird choices, was close to being on the route near Wisdom, but turned on a gravel road heading to a farm it seems. Though it seems she'll get to the route after Wisdom through there too. Odd.
There's almost 300 comments about Tanja's routing error in the FB group, rather active. https://m.facebook.com/groups/524758520982933?view=permalink&id=1669399363185504

Hippo's in Sula and has somehow managed to get tracked on the other side of the Bitterroot River.

Ah, I've only just seen that she didn't backtrack all the way towards the route. Initially I'd thought she managed to backtrack and then went off-route again, but she actually still hasn't rejoined it--which I think is against the rules? I hope she's all right mentally.

The turn for Wisdom is on the crest of a hill and near impossible to miss, it’s a big junction and well signed.

Hammo went off route near Wisdom in 2016 IIRC

By the looks of the timing updates she's walking her bike along that dirt track not riding it.
That mistake has been a big time suck.
It also looks like she might have made two mistakes. One for the initial off route and the a second taking the wrong right turn (the one in Gibbonsville rather than back up to the 93/43 junction) rather than going back up to the route where she left it.
I say this because of the 45 minute pause just after crossing the ID/MT border. At that point she'd spent just over 2h climbing up and if, at that point, she realised she was still off route she may have just thought 'fuck it' and tried to make her way back on to the route as best she could.
Hmm, there's also a bit of a pause at the junction in Gibbonsville. I wonder if she had a little debate with herself at that point about the backtrack all the way back up to the 93/43 too.
Turning off onto the dirt track was a mistake too, but then she may have had to do that if the road she was on (which led back to the 43 and the route) was closed. Impossible to tell from here. But I guess she felt she didn't want to be heading NE and SE was the better option.

Oof, and she's missed the turn (on the map at least) that would have seen her go back on route and she's now moving along where google maps doesn't even show a track.
It's easy to do all of this analysis from the comfort of a chair with access to google maps. She almost certainly has no cellular signal and will just have bare maps on her GPS and a route line some way over to the East.
It's 2am where she is. Must be a horrible feeling.
(Not quite the same but I went off route on PBP and wasted an hour trying to get back on to the route even with a GPS with mapping. Backtracking would have cost just 15 minutes but at silly o'clock in the morning I decided I knew better and the idea of going backwards just didn't make sense to me at that time.)

Wonder if her nav gps is flat or on the fritz. That would be awful.
Just published a wee update to the chrome extension, you can "star" riders and have the map only show those dots with a quick toggle. Hopefully didn't break anything badly, it's had the finest testing £0 can buy. New version is 2.x so if it says 1.. just wait I think. Might take an hour to "go out".
