  • I don't know anything about the other three in the lead (Pauli, Andersen, Rushton).
The sport is young enough that people can arrive on the scene and turn out to be top riders!

  • I should have said earlier that the leading four (and Evan's dot) are all in Grangeville, presumably sleeping.

  • Back to t shirt colour. I forgot to make the point of spf ratings. White is generally terrible for spf, around 5 or so. Where as a black top can be 30+. Obviously mesh isn’t good. But serious consideration and skin cancer sucks. And it’s something I’ve been really bad about before but I am trying to correct, perhaps too late.

I read something about this a while back when I was doing research for a jersey for TCR. I found my club jersey, which has quite a lot of black on it, felt hot last time so I wanted to find something cooler.

It said that, for normal clothes, black is always going to be hotter in sunlight as you'd expect. But that there is a way of making Lycra clothing which means black would be no hotter than a white jersey. Same article also said that the was a placebo effect: people just felt hot in black even if the jersey wasn't absorbing any more sun.

It said sun was an issue with mesh jerseys but didn't mention a relationship with colour. I can see that there would be for a really fine fabric, though.

There are lots of jerseys advertised as summer jerseys nowadays: I concluded I'd just get one of those, in a light colour, both to be cooler and for visibility. I'd be happy to wear a white jersey but I wouldn't wear black or grey.

  • In all this jersey talk, it's odd that hippy doesn't have lots of sponsorship, with so much advertising space available.

  • I love that.

    Sure; you did it!

  • Ha. Well nearly everyone was unknown then! And I blew in a big way.

  • What's the betting we see Hippy stopped at Hartland Inn or Meadow Valley at the next location update...

[EDIT] Or has he bivvy'd a few miles before that town.

Ah, no, Twitter update puts him at the Hartland.

  • So why didn't anyone predict that hippy would be at the Hartland Inn?

  • Because his tweetspaff got stuck in the tubes.

  • Yeah, no fucking po floor this time. Beer on arrival. How can so many lunatics be so nice...

  • Keep it up, doing well

  • Ashley and Greg (who were also staying at Hartland) are on their way already. 4am start for them.

Stephen and Tobias (10 miles back) are moving too. Both of them had a 6h stop and started moving again 90 minutes ago.

hippy definitely in night owl mode.

  • A rider has, apparently, had his bike stolen in Eugene. Be safe out there Darren and Hippy and look after your bikes.

  • Imagine how annoyed you’d be at that!!

  • How sad. The thief will probaly sell it for $50. What a waste.

  • Great attitude.

It means everything and nothing. I mean, I've got 20,000 miles on that bike, it's a part of me. But I'm in a race, I'm getting back on a bike,” he says. “If I have to go buy a one speed, I'm getting back on a bike and I'm going to finish this 4,000 mile race. I'm just getting started.

  • Three of those are so close together now. Andersen has the best pace of that pack I think.

  • Which dots are in hpvs?

  • Think it's Marcel Graber and Dave Lewis.

  • Mike Gheen also went off-course: http://trackleaders.com/transam18i.php?name=Mike_Gheen
Looks like he had a reason to deviate, but also it says he wants to finish in 23 days, so you can't imagine he would want to do that?

  • Ha! Taco Bell Stop.
