• So remaining bits:

Saddle: Romin Pro arriving early next week when @Holmes321 gets back from Mallorca
Seatpost: either black Gran Compe or black S65, although black S65 are pricey (and I have silver ones on two other bikes)
    Chain: Athena 11sp, ordered
    Cassette: Campag from Gruber
Tyres: I have a Strada LGG gumwall 28c already, so just going to get another one. Should look banging.
Headset: the Shimano will do in the short term, but long term it just got to go. Maybe replace with classic Campag, new Campag Record 1" threaded, or my ideal would be stealth Chris King for some bling.

  • Although ChainReaction have the Record 11sp chains on offer for £35, against the Athena for £29....

  • Looks like the headset is a shimano 600 from the 6207 group, I never had one of these but the later 6400 headset had a really low stack height. When I put Campa Record on my Olmo, I wanted to put on the matching record headset but the locknut wouldn't grip cause the steerer was cut to length for the low-stacking shimano headset. Might be sth to keep in mind before you get spendy with a chris king or so...

  • Yeah good intel, will certainly make sure the stack heights are matchy. It does need to get gone though. Also it does loosen over time.

  • I've a modern campag record headset I bought from Scilly for £20 and don't need-has a tiny split in the top cap from him overtightening but doesn't effect function. Pretty sure the stack height is 25mm or something

  • I have a Record on my Guerc so I'll measure them up, cheers, that could be perfect for the build.

  • The Bat is going into the shop today to get the crankset spinning properly. I had a 28mm Strada lgg so I got another and put them on the Geurc's wheels. Immediately two problems: there wasn't clearance for 28s in the fork, and the gumwalls didn't look great IMO. Maybe orange bikes and gum walls just don't mix. So I put them on the Bat instead, and so I think it will be the Bat that gets the wheelset and the Guerciotti will have its old one back. Black Romin Evo Pro is enroute, will be getting the Campagnolo Record headset from Gruber once I'm certain the stack will match, and then all I need is a seatpost, still undecided.

Hoping to have it riding by Sunday.

  • this is awesome

  • Thanks! It's really shaping up now, but I fucked up by not getting the shop to fit the chain while it was it. In the back of my mind I knew you needed a special tool for Campagnolo chains but tried to bodge it and broke the pin. So I've had to order a new pin and will pop it into the shop to fit it, so a delay to getting it on the road. A further setback is I don't think the Campagnolo Record headset will fit. I have one on the Guerciotti and measuring them the Campy is 5mm taller, so I'm stuck with that fugly Shimano one until I figure something out. I mean it might still fit but it would be a gamble. Any advice?

  • Got it rolling! It's lighter and also feels more stretched out than the Guerciotti. Thinking I need an inline seatpost for it. Would anyone hate me for fitting a Thomson?

  • Would anyone hate me for fitting a Thomson?

No doubt, but go for it. Your bars have quit some reach, could also try some with a shorter reach (for example compact bars if you like them).

    Bike looks really good!

  • Same stem length and same bars as my other bike, but it does feel reachy. I've had the frame for two years and have run it in a variety of set ups, but I'm struggling to dial this one in.

  • Better pic. I've discovered as my designated winter bike I've actually ended up with a superb road machine too good for nipping in and out of Bristol. Gonna lean on the MTB instead

  • Also the Caleido tape and Campagnolo hoods look kinky

  • Campagnolo Record/Mavic Open Pros

  • Tried to find a second hand one on here, couldn't so ended up buying a new Thomson, so at least I got one in 250mm so no ugly cutting down. Took it out this morning and expected lots of adjusting to get it right but it felt brilliant from the off. Such a relief, was despondent after finding it uncomfortable to ride thinking I would have to change the stem or handlebars but with the Thomson the ride was close to perfect. Feeling vindicated after was has been a difficult build.

Headset and peddles are still temporary, both the old Shimano 600s. A Primax headset has a stack height of 26mm, I measure the Shimano at 25mm, think they'll swap out? @Sig_Arlecchino maybe?

  • Thomson works well with the modern black groupset!

  • I'd say it depends on how far the steerer has been cut. If only 2-3 threads of the locknut engage with the current 600 headset, it's probably not enough. But if the locknut threads on fully, you might get away with it. It also depends on the thickness of the washer under the locknut. I have a 600 headset on my cyfac and the steerer has been cut relatively short, the top nut still engages about 3 threads but there wouldn't be enough room for an extra millimeter of stack. If the steerer almost touches the plastic ring on the locknut, I'd guess it could work. If there's some distance between the steerer and the plastic ring (as on my cyfac in the photo) it's likely too short.

  • Thanks, wasn't sure whether it might jar with the overall aesthetic but it seems to work.

@Sig_Arlecchino yep so it is going to be marginal. Will see if I can have a look at it.

  • Right have come to a decision, the Batavus and Guerciotti are basically the same bike. Originally the Batavus was supposed to be the winter/wet commute bike, but it wasn’t that comfortable on the commute. I’m not currently doing enough road riding to justify two road bikes so I’ve decided to sell the Guerciotti. Since the Batavus was a failure as a winter bike I decided I want something fat-tired and comfortable for the winter commuting, so going to buy a Surly Steamroller through cycle-to-work in January. That means I can finally stop torturing the Razesa on the commute and finally get it in and restored. The vision for the Steamroller will be 35mms and swapping out the fork for a Straggler disc, and run it fixed. Right now I can’t imagine a more fun bike.

As to the Guerciotti, would be interested to see what people think it is worth and where best to shift. I’ll list it here first, then maybe Facebook if it doesn’t sell. I was thinking £500? I wouldn’t be selling the Open Pro wheelset in the picture, but I have a serviceable Planet X wheelset instead. I also wouldn’t include the Romin as my arse loves them.

    So spec is:

Guerciotti Record 58cm frameset, Columbus tubing (Thron I think)
Campagnolo Athena 11sp Ultra Torque groupset (2012 estimated)
Campagnolo Record Threaded headset (2 years old)
Nitto cockpit (S65 seatpost, Technomic stem 100mm, Nitto Noodle bars 40cm)
    Planet X 11 speed wheelset

The bike has been serviced recently and has new cables and tubes, new bearings in the BB, and a new Miche cassette, 12-28 I think.

The frame has no dings, never been crashed, but the paintwork is fragile so it does have plenty of chips. Thoughts on price?

Back to the Razesa, have bought a Chris King headset for it which will get installed upon restoration. Will then make it into a nice summer build, dry weather only. I also have a Promax headset for the Bat, although in a rather dirty grey colour. I want it black: shall I just rattle-can it or look into having it anodised?

Sorry about the extra long post, been ruminating on this for a while.

  • Right the Guerc is listed, I'm hoping to sell it through the forum but not confident of it, we shall see.

The Surly Steamroller should be arriving next week, so looking forward to rolling on some fat rubber and also not feeling guilty for riding the Razesa. I have these for it and the Batavus:

Although not confident the Primax will fit the Batavus. Now I've got a black Chris King for the Razesa I'm re-considering what colour to paint it, possibly a shiny red or perhaps Orange as the Guerc is going and I do love having an orange bike. Also debating whether to bother with decals or not. As soon as the Surly is ready I'm going to strip it and get it to Argos. Hopefully then Guerc sells fast and I can use the money for the restoration, and also upgrading the Steamroller.

  • The Bat is looking incredible!! Well done!

  • Cheers mate, rides like a bullet. Just need to resolve the headset issue.

Keep thinking about the colour for the Razesa, with the black CK headset I like the idea of a dark, glossy red. 101 Flam crimson on This colour chart? Would that work with the chrome fork? Else paint the fork black too.
