r4 this morning lamenting the fact that the lamentable ambassador and jeremy hunt were now having to pull out of an official engagement between them and... i fucking vanka trump.
no further comment on the appropriateness of this meeting was forthcoming, presumably because bootlickerbc.

TM must be trolling with her 'full support'.
Or is this like the football chairman's "vote of confidence"?

Does stink of political machinations more than an attempt to destabilise an alliance. Farage has been angling for Darrochs job for a while and it would suit Boris to have a more pro-brexit and pro trump diplomat to help any future trade deals post eu exit, especially as Darroch had another year left on his contract.
With regards to the email, what he said was embarrassing for both parties but not exactly revealing. He’s paid to provide his honest opinion of what’s happening over the pond and he did so. Not entirely sure how diplomatic cables are distributed but it would seem more likely he sent the memos to foreign secretary and they were distributed as was seen fit. And worth remembering that both hunt and boris will have multiple inside contacts from the foreign office.

Yeah, calling them ‘emails’ makes them sound less official than they are - writing cables is one of the core responsibilities of the ambassador: it’s how they tell their home country what’s going on in the country to which they are posted.
-
• #7956
But a cable is basically communicated in the form of emails right? Or is there some form of encryption or messaging platform that makes them different from an ordinary email?
-
• #7957
Encrypted emails or physical documents i thought.

Ticker-tape and telegrams, shirley...

It said on BBC yesterday that the contents of the communiques were wide ranging enough that only a very small number of people would have access to all of them, and it would be a fairly straightforward process to find out who had done the leaking.
-
• #7960
Enigma encoded messages on the legs of carrier pigeons that are locked inside briefcases handcuffed to the wrists of slave couriers. The combination code for the brief case is tattooed on the skull of the courier and the hair is allowed to grow over.

cor, imagine farage as an ambassador for this country, maybe some tiny island cutoff from all communication and post being the only way he gets heard.... maybe
but really could that happen ? -
• #7962
I doubt the Johnson/Lynton Crosby Regime is going to be very interested in finding out who leaked the leak they told them to leak.

Despite the facts that Trump is an Epstein contact and the U.S. attorney who cut the 2008 no-plea deal for Epstein is Trump's labour secretary, Trump supporters are already portraying this as a liberal thing and citing it as proof of Qanon/Pizzagate.

Seems like a huge risk for either hunt or Boris at this stage of the leadership contest with very little gain. I still think it looks like either Iran, Russia or wiki leaks testing the water .
Encrypted or not, everyone knows if you put something in print it can be shared outside of your control. So you do it over the phone or you’re clever enough to write it in a discreet way that conveys what you want to say. I would have thought the our top diplomat in the most important role could manage that. His rag to riches story is bollocks too. I don’t know why May is still backing him, another national embarrassment.
-
• #7965
another national embarrassment.
Why? It is the opinion of pretty much every politician and diplomat in the world that Trump's administration is inept and dysfunctional.
-
• #7966
The embarrassment is being caught saying it, the irony is that teflon Trump says much worse things about people, leaders and whole countries on twitter, the difference is Darroch's assessments are accurate.
-
• #7967
Agreed, which is why I think it's absolutely correct that May is still backing him. It's his job to say these things. The leak would seem to be neither here nor there.

You think the Russians were tapping the transatlantic cable?
-

You think the Russians were tapping the transatlantic cable?
I have no idea. I think the source of the leak is relevant to domestic politics, but internationally our response should be "Yes he said that, it's his job to be honest to his own government. So what?"
-
• #7970
Where have you gained this informed opinion?
-
• #7971
I thought Trump visiting the UK twice was an embarrassment
-
• #7972
This.

Farage bein sent abroad with a job where he can't be publically the UK government would be a massive win for the Tories.
Look what happened to UKIP after he left; it fell apart and turn into an Alt Right mob.
Wouldn't put it past Boris offerin him the job; world gone mad !

"after"?

When Farage was in charge UKIP were a serious political force, I believe they were the reason why Cameron held the Euro Referendum. Yes right wing and yes some pretty nasty policies and members to boot.
Gerard Batten, becoming leader after a shambolic period took them to in a new step change Alt Right direction, Islamaphobic, supporting Tommy Robinson / Stephen Yaxley-Lennon etc. They are now more like the BNP.
I am very glad they were rejected at the Euro elections and Batten has resigned. I expect UKIP to cease to exist in any meaningful was soon. Compare that with the fortunes of the Brexit Party, with many of the same policies ( that I dislike) is my point.
yet another hope of getting teflon trump impeached
won't hold my breath though
