It actually seems difficult to imagine a much more respectful protest gesture, if you're going to make one, than 'taking a knee'. I dug into it a bit and in american football, it is done (a) while listening to the coach (b) when when opposing player is badly injured in order to force play to stop. Seems pretty polite to me - hardly a black power salute.
Also, teams used to not come onto the field until after the anthem. Apparently military sponsored the change about 8 years ago specifically as a recruitment thing.

It's also done to halt your, losing, opposing team from playing when running down the clock at the end of a match.

Ah - I suppose that makes it a bit more negative.

Almost a week after the Puerto Rico got hit by Hurricane Maria, Trump pops up to remind them that even though much of the island has been destroyed, they still owe billions to Wall Street. Delightful.

Referenced in the latest 5.38 politics podcast.
Pertinent point:'After his basketball career was over, Abdul-Rauf moved to Atlanta, since his house in his hometown was burned to the ground in 2001.' -

Switch the races, read that back and it's not satire but currently accepted reality.
Identity politics is all balls, but right now Trump's popularity with his base is fueled by his misrepresentation by the never-trumpers. The guy is a total twat, but he's bringing out the worst in everyone. /rant

This is what happens when the route to most pro sports teams goes through University. You find some exceptionally talented individuals. He was also a hell of a player too.
