That was my impression, too.

Trump obviously has some experience in keeping up a front, but that would usually have been in far simpler circumstances in which he couldn't get called out so easily. Meeting people who are competent and whom he can't simply knock into line (because they are independent powers) must be a difficult combination for him.

It's just perpetual misdirection, which probably stems from not knowing what the fuck he's doing and just making the right noises rather than some nefarious avant-garde performance art distraction technique inspired by the Kremlin.
