  • Probably, but personally I wouldn't

    Any updates on this?

    Any updates on this?

Yeah, a bunch. My Hope Pro Evo 2 40t rear hub can take the M8000 XT 11-42 cassette no problem so I'm just doing a proper 'old and new bits on and old frame' build. Not sure on rims actually. I think I want silver ones. Might go vintage on that. Some Mavics or Sun's.

Not sure which drop bar shifterlevers will work with the 11speed XT if any. Paging @edscoble...

    Going disc now.

Yeah, need the stopping power and disc is pretty nice in the wet I've heard.

Which ones to get I don't know yet. Recommendations?

    Looking at the BB7's. Good?

  • The frame is a 1994 model with Triple butted true temper tubing. Better than I thought initially.

  • I went Disc at front and canti (with high quality pads and long straddle cable for m=better modulation) on back. Works a treat.
I'd avoid BB7's. They're just a pain in the arse to adjust and keep there. They work when set up well, but you have to spend time with them.
I'd splash the cash and go for TRP Spyre's

  • Yeah, looked at that yesterday and the Spyre's seems like you could set and forget.

Also might just scrap the whole XT thing because of no drop bar levers that fits.

Saw a cheap Sun Race 11-42t cassette that is 10spd. Gives a good ratio for some steep hills and good on the flats. Fits straight onto the Hope freehub.

Couple that with a SRAM X5 and a SuperstarComponents I/O 38t NW ring.

Do you need a longer b-screw for the X5 to take the 42t?

  • Found a fork in my dads stash. 26" and 415mm a-c. Perfect for now!

  • Would the 28h hold up on an XTR hub you think with two small panniers and a bar bag?

Neither will take a rim brake. As you know. The 28 would need to be on the front, but then if you are putting a disc brake on it...which is OK XC and CX racing but a bit touch and go for touring / every day with luggage. I'd use tough spokes and I carry some spares :)

Crest and alpine are not the most resilient of rims either so you'd need to be careful with spoke tension and whatnot.

Not much room for error, really.

  • I've a Sunrace 42t with X7 mech. Didn't need a longer b screw but it is at its limit.

Don't know if I like the ratio of the cassette though-there's a bit of a jump so found myself contemplating a Cx double chainset with it.

  • Also, HyRd's get a thumbs up for being the poor man's hydro but better than mechanical discs-BB7's are shite by comparison.

  • Yeah, will probably just chuck them into the cave and start over.

I need a pair of rims that can stand up to some abuse, are reasonably cheap and in silver with a machined sidewall. Where should I look?

Is vintage the only way to go in this?

Hmm, so what's problem you reckon? No midrange gears?

  • Not bad at all. Cheers @Chak

  • Ok, so I pounced on a fork from eBay that @bankiren put up in his thread.

50mm rake, canti tabs and IS disc tab.

Have done an order on SJS on stuff that I need too. Now awaiting my paycheck.

First time around I'll do a 1x8 build with canti brakes.

  • Now for some questions.

The 9 speed chains does work with 8 speed casettes and rear mechs right?

Would a 9 speed chain work well with a Narrow Wide chainring like the RaceFace or I/O from Superstar Comp.

Do I need a spacer on the hope hub for the cassette to lock down correctly? If so, where do I get one?

  • I'm running a 9s chain with a n/w Superstarcomponents chainring. Works perfectly.

  • I like the sound of that. Ordered one.

  • 9 speed chain will work with the rear mech, bit dubious about mixing an 8 speed cassette and 9 speed chain though.
I've just put a Gamut narrow wide on mine, with an 8 speed chain, which appears to work ok

  • As per here http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12689743
Says it shouldn't be a problem.

But will bite the bullet and go 10sp instead of faffing about with 8sp.

    Anybody wants an XT thumbie?

Also, anyone selling a used SRAM 10 speed trigger lever?

  • So, an XT M700 crank with a Surly 38t chainring - how long should the BB spindle be?

  • Is in an 8spd XT thumbie?

And try and get it as close to the frame as sensible, think I got away with a 113mm on mine, which leaves a fairly decent chainline with 3mm between frame and crank

  • It's a 7spd SGS. The rear mech is an STX SGS 7spd.

Have decided to put my money into the Pompetamine I bought for some CX fun this fall.
