  • I used to abuse a 12" Bahco adjustable for just about every job in the late 70s and early 80s, including using it as a hammer - in the end it was stolen from my locker (1984) and I still have the replacement (issued 1985) in good working order. Google "National Coal Board" for context...
I did buy a smaller (6") adjustable to carry in a saddle bag around the turn of the century - still as good as new.

    tl;dr yes, buy Bahco

  • I've borrowed a friends who is a plumber and they feel solid, the jaws seem pretty precise as well.

  • I've got a plastic and a metal one if anyone is keen. Plastic is for gratis, metal (cantilever style) for a beer or two.

  • +1 on Bahco for adjustables. So long as you don't mind the thread on the adjuster being the wrong (right) way around.

  • Any pics of the metal one mate?

  • Will take some this evening.

  • Ended up getting these on the Bay as I needed a large adjustable spanner. £14 all up including delivery for some good vintage tools. Happy to give away the 6" one if anybody wants?

  • Old britool are good.

I like halfords tools as they have a life time guarantee. Quite cheap with the trade card. The ratchet spanners are brilliant.

Toolchest wise look for roller bearing draws. They make all the difference.

  • Was wondering what the Halfords Professional range was like.

  • Looks better than the screw driver looking thing I have atm.

  • You can have a go with mine an see how you like them.

  • Thanks for the offer. There isn't a whole lot more I need, pretty much a decent screwdriver and hammer.

  • Good find!

    But Evans though...

Still a quick goggle has found a couple of other UK stockists!

  • When you see it, it just makes so much sense that you wonder why it's taken so long.

  • Does anyone SE have a crown race setter?

  • Looks like Evans have a similar one

However, this doesn't work with Campagnolo Chainring bolts. Bought it. Tried it. Just too big.

  • Good to know. I have Campag.

  • You can file it down a little and I'm sure it would work. From memory the packet does say Shimano/SRAM and the guy in the shop said he wasn't sure it would work with Campy.

  • You can file it down a little

My Shimano chainring bolt holder has seen some file action and every time I use the one at work which hasn't, I think I must take a suitable file and 'adjust' it. I always forget though.

  • Talking of bolt holders, I made this years and years ago from a keyring fob, long before I knew there was even a proper tool for the job, I still have it in my not so frequent tool box.
I think a lot of folk love making something out of a random bit of kit for pennies that does the job sufficiently if not sometimes better than the actual specifically designed tool :o)
