It looks like the underlying poll was commissioned by the Independent/Mirror so no particular right-wing bias there. http://www.comres.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Independent_SundayMirror_July2016-Poll_tables.pdf Even those who voted for Labour in the 2015 election have May as the better prime minister (40% to 36%).
He's also viewed as less principled than May which can't be a good thing

new labour. who think poor folks are far too busy trying to shovel sausage rolls down their spawn's gullets to concern themselves with the democratic process.

He's quite the guy: https://twitter.com/steve_mccabe/status/755164662669381633

Steve's my local MP, he's OK really but really not very twitter savvy. He gets a lot of shit from randoms on twitter.
I agree that some people are too worried about how to afford food than to care about the next labour leader, he just needs a better assistant!
(maybe he should have given me the job when applied then, fuckwit, I wouldn't have let this happen #stillbitter) -

no he's not, he's justifying the illiberal £25 joining fee by suggesting poor people don't give a fuck about politics anyway. it's a shitty thing to say and he knows it - that's why he deleted the tweet.
surely not having £25 to vote would make engaging in politics a MASSIVE priority?

i don't think he's justifying the fee, he seems as 'mystified' as everyone else (ie he knows why the fee is so high but doesn't want to admit it).
BUT I think there are a lot of very poor people that don't care who is labour leader, because they've got far more pressing things to worry about, like affording rent and food.I'm not saying he's JC or anything, but he isn't DC. Just an out of touch old MP doing his best.

Also that sounds trite and horrible, I apologise.
Just ignore me. -
• #684
His twitter interactions don't put him in a good light tbh.
-
• #685
you're far more forgiving than I.
'trot entryists'? fuck off, steve.

Also that sounds trite and horrible, I apologise.
Just ignore me.i think you're miles better at explaining these things than steve could ever hope to. have you considered running for local elections?
-

Yeah, you know when your mate gets wasted and says something embarrassing, and your all like 'nah, Steve's OK' but then afterwards you realise, maybe he's the problem with EVERYTHING...
-
• #688
well the fact that he never hired you speaks volumes about his lack of judgement.

• #689
Too right.

Thanks all. Its been a journey.

From his Wikipedia page it looks like Steve McCabe has dedicated his life to public and social service, but he 'don't tweet well' so clearly he isn't competent to do his job. FML.
The blogger who identified the malaise of Labour being the clicktivists taking over had it spot on.

• #693
ok, so if he'd said what he did on a podium or was overheard in a crowded pub would you be more inclined to reassess your opinion of him? why should his record give him a free pass?
-
• #694
I don't quite understand his logic. Are "trots" historically poor? Or just cheap?
-
• #695
to be fair, he did spell 'Trots' with a capital 'T' - which shows respect.
-
• #696
There is a lot of wilful misinterpretation and desire to take offence.

I'm not offended, he just seems like a prick. Having 'public and social' spirited jobs doesn't preclude someone from being a prick.
The electoral gains have been tiny, he boasted about things not collapsing in the local elections. That's a really low bar at a time when austerity had caused the double dip everyone said it would.
The best speech I heard was his apology for the Iraq war. It was great. But it sort of confirmed he's good in righteous mode.
There's probably not much point going over details of how he's not communicating a positive vision. Do his supporters really think he's doing that? Do they think this is it or are they telling themselves there's a more effective Corbyn that'll emerge once he stuck it out and risen above? Or that somehow the electorate will come to its senses and see qualities that are apparent to them (his supporters) and not others?
