• At the weekend I enjoyed some hot-smoked salmon steaks in the garden with my portable Abu Röken (smoker), dug out of storage for many years.

  • These are the scenes we like to see :)

  • Got some of those coconut briquettes. Still going! Finished the brats long ago

  • I tell you what, that stainless grill is a beast. Went to pick it up with one hand and had to steady myself.

  • I now smell of charcoal smoke. Order has been restored.

  • I now smell of charcoal smoke.

I love this, a primal pleasure...

  • That coconut charcoal is great! Took about 30 min to get going (as stated on the packet), then was nice and hot and went on for ages. Turned completely to ash, no filler shit like I remember from regular cheap briquettes.

  • I picked up a Weber Go Anywhere the other week (slightly by accident, it was reduced but out of stock so I ordered it thinking I'd probably cancel it or it would never come back into stock, I'd pretty much forgotten about it and remembered when it was delivered).

Haven't had a chance to try it yet but looks a well put together piece of kit. It should be easy enough to stick in the boot or just use for a quick bit of direct cooking. Also thinking it will be useful for catering for vegetarians with meat on the kettle and veg on the small one.

Yes. The super clean finish is great.

Also. Why no one has done charcoal smoke men's cologne is beyond me.

  • Which charcoal did you get / where from? Definitely need to up my charcoal game from petrol station fare.

  • The Zip coconut one, just from Tesco. Was recommended on here so grabbed a bag when I saw it.

  • Ta. (BTW - watch out round your endz - there was a stabbing outside of Lidl the other day.)

  • Cheers. Which Lidl? The one near the pond?

Stabbings are not exactly uncommon here, unfortunately. But I'm fortunate enough to not be in the targeted demographic.

  • Found the article. While that one is close, it's not my closest.

  • I've been using the Weber lumpwood stuff and it seems to burn out really quickly. It seems to get pretty hot (over 300°C) at the start but even topping up with more from a chimney it faded pretty quickly.

Need to do more experimenting I think.

  • Weber lumpwood has worked pretty well for me, didn't notice it lasting less long than e.g. some "restaurant grade" stuff that I've used as well. It does seem very dry and burns hot.

The weber stuff doesn't tend to have the huge lumps you get in the restaurant stuff which in some ways is handy, depending on what you are cooking at the time.

  • Mini Kamado arrived today. Really is dinky.

Perfect for a couple of burgers on a weeknight etc.

  • Remote temp probe has yet to arrive so totally winging it, so to speak. Trying to keep the ambient temp probe (which is near the bird) at or a little above 180 and cooking like I would in the oven. "Can" (it's a stainless thing I got off eBay that you fill with whatever) is filled with Punk IPA, for the craic. Rubbed thoroughly with Old Bay.

  • This looks great, can you fit a whole side of salmon in it?

  • I did a couple last year, took about 2 hours. There are lemon wedges under the skin as well.
    So moist and tender !

Abu smokers came in 2 sizes. The brown enamelled one is the smaller unit and it has a grill pan of 14cm x 25cm, so that takes 2 or 3 whole mackerel/trout or a good size fillet of salmon, pollack etc. The larger size was made of stainless steel and it might take a whole side of salmon, but it would depend on the size of the fish. I gave one the larger smokers to my in-laws and their home is overseas so measuring it is not possible right now.

  • Ok thanks I’ll check it out

  • i got an aldi mini kamado but its smaller than i expected, anyone want it before i return? collect from croydon or could potentially drop off very locally
