  • Gotta try to get this little gem out tonight. The lock ring came off no problems but I doubt this will be that easy. Trying to find the tool to do it is going to be a pain too I think.

  • If you have an early 80s one, it's going to be a bit of a task finding out what it is. They transferred from French to British threads with a small period of Swiss around that time. Below is a pic of the Swiss one (according to the cyclespeugeot site!). You can see the line on the fixed cup that I mentioned...good luck!

  • Pick a direction and turn! :-)

Re. appropriate tool, would it not just be one of these?

They're a pain if you have to exert more torque than it would take to open a jar of gherkins, mind.

  • Good point. I meant in regards to replacing it, as mine is Swiss and fucked! I could spend a shit load on those custom ones (can't remember the company) or go over to a threadless BB. Not sure what they are like though...

  • Velo orange do french BBs, not sure about swiss. I was warned off the theadless option by my LBS but can't remember what the reason was. My main ride is mid-80s Gitane with a french BB that's in great condition despite being over 30 years old. I want to run ISO cranks on it, though so am currently trying to work out if i can replace the spindle. I heard that british spindles have the same middle measurement (from bearing flange to bearing flange i guess) and -might- work.

Sorry - slight thread deviation, but hopefully relevant :-)

  • Tool is ordered. Should be here Thursday. I will give a good old coating of wd until then. Not looking forward to that evening. I know the odd are slim but I really want it to be British thread. I'm assuming that French are easy to get hold of.

  • Scrap that. I love how efficient the Japanese are. British bottom bracket thank you very much.

  • Winning!

  • Build one of these rigs and show your stem who's boss!

  • Really enjoyed watching that!

  • Slight overkill but if it works it works.

  • Well done.

  • lucky on the British BB!

  • She's out. Lots of swearing required.

  • Trying to decide on stripping the paint and repainting with new transfers. Or to leave the patina and clearcoat over the top.

  • Leave it, just get it riding O.K.

  • Slight hiccup in fitting the rear mech to the frame yesterday. There is no mount for the b gap screw. Any ideas??
Basically the rear mach hanger is just a hole. I have had a look and i can get one of these.
Pretty cheap if it allows it to work

  • I don't think it's a 531 steel frame, but not the cheapest of the Peugeots either. The Simplex dropout implies it's a medium range frame I think.
I would date it around the 70s due to the total lack of braze ons?
    Surely not 80s

  • I currently have a Peugeot frame with simplex dropouts that's Vitus tubing on the 3 main tubes (and presumably carbolite 103 for the rest - chromed forks have a carbolite sticker). Mine's a mid 80s, bit this frame might be a similar tube set?

  • This suggests second half of the 70s. Namely 77-79.

  • And I think it's this one in different colors:

    PR 10 LE
    or
    PRN 10 E

And that means it probably really is 531 (same as the PS model), but with non-531 forks.

  • Close, but look at the fork crown. It's different.
Same year, but I am sure it's the PR, not the PS.

The difference between the two models is that, in the cheaper PR we have here, the forks are not 531, but Peugeout Lightweight tubes (indeed the forks made me say it was not 531 in the first place!)
