  • That's commuting around London, there are the filtering bits, the slowing down before lights, the speeding up after etc that are bringing the average down. I'm honestly not taking minutes to hit 20 and I'd rather not lose out on hitting high 20s on the OKR/embankment/wherever else the road opens up a bit just to spin up a couple of seconds quicker. I still pull away from lights faster than most on my commute.

Edit: just compared average speeds (as given by strava) for same commutes on fixed and geared. They're about the same, I think fixed might be slightly faster on average but it's a bit of a faff identifying which is which on the mobile app.

  • Wait wait wait. I ride 95GI around town. Is there something wrong with me?

  • Oh and yeh, op, do get a SS but not a Mango.

The list of better alternatives above is pretty good.

  • Don't get me wrong man, if it works for you then that's aces.

It's just you're doing it wrong and all the real fixieskidders are laughing at you.

  • Do you live in a velodrome?

  • The bike was from when I lived back in Oxford so basically yes.

  • If there's any contract out there for a (mostly ex) smoker who likes cake, sign me up!

    Form an orderly queue champ!

  • Bro do u even TT?

    If not, you should.

  • 48/19 allows me to commute and go for hilly rides. It's low enough to get me up 15% inclines and high enough to enable me to do 35mph on descents.

  • 35mph on 48x19?

If Sheldon worked on WindowsFone I reckon it would work that to about 150rpm. Spinny.

  • Nope, in excess of 190rpm

  • If google worked on windowsfone I would post that vid of the spinny Chinese turbo training sessions right now.

  • Haha, guess I'll have to take the giggles from the brkls cru :)

  • Ive only ever ridden fixed and single speed and im nevous about trying gears

Don't worry, its just like riding 5 SS bikes at the same time without having to stop, get off and swop to another one. #mindblowndotgif

  • Also if your average speed fixed is the same as gears you're doing gears wrong.

Don't get me wrong man, if it works for you then that's aces.

  • Committing lulz.

  • On that commute (OKR/NKR/embankment) fixed is about the same. On my longer commute with hills I use gears.

I think that on a relatively flat route fixed would be just as fast as gears if you're not geared to spin out at 15mph.

  • 48/19 and you would not be spinning out at 15mph

  • @dicki It's more I don't want to make the wrong investment :)

  • Speed Gear mph.5.0 10.0 15.0 20.0 25.0 30.0 35.0 40.0 45.0 50.0 Speed Gear
    48x19.....................25 50.. 75 100 126 151 176 201 226 251 48x19

  • @bikes_knob Thanks for the advice! It's a shame because I really liked the goemetry of the frame, but I'm glad you guys have steered me in the right direction.

  • On a commute with lights, traffic, choppers etc. yes I don't think there's much difference between fixed and gears. But for anything else anyone who actually knows how to use gears would leave the fixed rider behind, assuming it's not Graeme Obree or something...

  • damn formating

48x19=50mph@251 rpm :) spin to win

  • @853Superfly Can you explain to me what the numbers (42x18) are? Sorry to be an idiot again.

  • 42 = the number of teeth on your chainring and 18 = the number of teeth on the sprocket on your rear hub.
