Yes, that's what I've heard. Anyone on here moved?
-
• #553
dunno if he's on here but Dear Susan framebuilder did.
-
• #554
@luckyskull did too but not sure if he's on here much any more.
-
• #555
High Wycombe - anyone moved there? I'm considering reverting to the commuter life...

And the other half went to Hastings.

Re: Margate. Mate of mine bought a massive doer-upper in the east side of Margate and did it up. They sold it because it got broken in to six times in a year.

I do like Hastings tho. Had a good lunch in the Crown on Saturday. The beach is great and bought some ace fresh fish straight off the boat to take home.

Hi!
Technically I haven’t met anyone previously of shoreditch though, just wider hackney and Brixton.

Grew up there, was a bland shit hole but some redeeming spots if you knew where to look. Good cycling in the Chilterns. My mate has just opened up a craft beer brewery, and judging by his Facebook feed there's quite a few decent places to eat and drink now. I'm overdue a visit.

Any particular areas to look out for / avoid?
Went there on Saturday and found a Brewdog-style taproom (Mad Squirrel) in the town centre, which seemed promising...

Micklefield, Desborough Ave., Green St. all used to be dodgy a.f. but it's been nearly 10yr since I lived there so these are probably cool hipster hangouts by now ;)

It’s not far from me, but there are better places nearby which in my opinion are either nicer, have a bit more going on and are easier to get into London. Check out Bracknell, Windsor, Egham/Staines, Reading (bit further out), Ealing (bit further in).
None of these places quite have London’s buzz. Fashion runs slightly behind, food and beer generally isn’t as good and it starts to become real white-man’s land in places. Ealing is worth a look. It has changed quite a lot over the last 20 years and has plenty of its own thing going on.

Ealing
Expensive...

Anyone live on or near north downs? So from m23 east to dartford ish, either just inside or outside m25.
-
• #566
Fuck that, UKIP central.
-
• #567
Indeed. Seems very expensive too. But looks like I’ll be in Croydon 9-5 most weekdays next year. So would like to be able to commute by bicycle, so I can do some cycling! Seems like best place to make the work.
So where can I live that is a nice cycle to Croydon, but that I can easily throw some extra riding in on the at home. Plus needs to be on a train line with < 1h to Mayfair.

Good roads to ride around there, but not sure I'd want to live in any of the obvious towns. We considered it before we settled in south east London, but nowhere appealed, and we spent a long time sussing them out.
-
• #569
Only for a year. Yes nice roads, used to train that way daily when I lived in Streatham.
I lived in Amersham last year. That was Tory central.
-
• #570
Ok. Anyone in Beckenham?
Which is London, so kind of wrong thread. Never mind. -

Just seen this. I moved from Ealing to High Wycombe in 2012. I say High Wycombe, actually it's on the A40 between West Wycombe & Stokenchurch, 4 miles & 25 mins cycle from the station. I commute to the City every day.
Good points: beautiful countryside, great cycling, Chiltern Railway is a reasonably good commute line. Great schools. Not too outrageous house prices
Bad points: to be honest High Wycombe itself isn't the nicest town either aesthetically or culturally. I only go out there in the evening if I'm going to the cinema, otherwise it's one of the country pubs or Marlow.
In a rush now but let me know if you have any specific questions

I'm from that area originally hence I know HW well, I wouldn't recommend the town its-self. It is quite bland and there is a dark underbelly of crime and drugs which they have never really managed to shake. Attempts to neaten the place up (such as building the Eden shopping centre) didn't quite work, every time I visit more shops and pubs are being closed down.
The surrounding villages are very nice, such as Great and Little Missenden, Hazelmere, Penn, Hughenden, Kingshill etc., however like @skinny said its a tory stronghold which isn't always bad but you will encounter a lot of entitled people. Plus if you are going to commute on the Chiltern Line from HW then prepare to part way with about with a few thousand £'s on season tickets.

The commute costs are the same wherever though, at least on Chiltern Rail you usually get a seat. I agree re the HW darker side, it does mean it's cheaper than other places with a similar commute time

Me and @andyp I believe. You're in the countryside after 15mins riding, racing at Palace (on my doorstep) and HHV also within 15 mins. Kent House 19mins to Victoria. It's pretty decent and close enough to Croydon to get there easily (17mins on tram for me) but far enough away so you have a healthy distance from Croydon!
-
• #575
Yes the 20 min train ride to Victoria is helping me sell the 3rd move in 3 years to the partner.
I know the riding that way, coming from Streatham is ride out that way.
What’s the ‘town’ like itself. Much decent to eat and drink?
My plan is I can cycle to/from work and then throw on 2-3 hours on the way in/home training. Which means I can keep fit. Living in Chelmsford that’ll be impossible with a 1h motorbike commute.
Half of Shoreditch
