  • Plus, i'm in London everyday anyway so it's not like i've totally lost touch with it.

  • Phew, thank god you managed to find some middle class people to bond with.

  • Didn't this pub feature in the news recently?

  • Being middleclass and a UKIP idiot are far from mutually exclusive, but otherwise good one đź‘Ť

  • I’m middle class and have middlebrow middle class, middle aged interests like cycling, collecting old records and playing the guitar. Is it shocking that after 18 months of not meeting anyone in a predominantly working class right wing town that i’m pleased to have found someone who extended the hand of friendship and who shares my indie schmindie folkie tastes and lefty politics. I only mentioned their jobs as they have all sorts of shared terms of reference with my wife in the academic and charity sector. Fwiw, i Work in construction and spend half my life on building sites and am quite comfortable in that world. I’m just pleased to have met some cool and friendly locals with whom I can share the experience of being here. Meh.

  • it's such a pain in the dick getting home after a night out that I haven't done it in months!! I'll solve it soon enough, not easy tho'.

Can't you walk whilst pushing a bike? Or something?

  • ^ha

^^some of my best friends are working class people

  • Soooo...... anyone know anything about Chelmsford?

Except that it is in Essex and 30 minutes to Liverpool st. Logistical issues of a separation and the ex heading to Suffolk it looks like a good halfway point

  • Unfortunately starting off working class, (god knows what I am now) not having gone to university and having working class interests like cycling and alcohol abuse I've not had the luxury of being a political and cultural outsider, so patronising middle class toss is fair game in my book.
Fwiw I work in an office and spend half my life in meetings with middle class people and am quite comfortable in that world .
It's good to know you've found cool and friendly locals with whom you can share the experience of being political and cultural outsiders surrounded by C18 and the great unwashed- happy times :) maybe lay off the gin when you're bonding

  • (god knows what I am now)

    I'd suggest "bitter"

  • :) that's quite good , inaccurate but funny

  • Mrs Hammer is from there and hates it due to the TOWIE factor and rampant keeping-up-with-the-jonesism. I commuted in from there via train for a couple of weeks and it was a miserable 30 mins without a seat.
    Nice cinema though.

  • @underuser53929 I’m not going get drawn into “i’m from further north from you and I grew up in a paper bag on the middle of the road” shit with you so I’ll spare you any more my patronising middle class toss. Good luck in ur next meeting.

  • Nope. No complaints here. Unfortunately.

  • The ex is going to be in or near Ipswich so Chelmsford seems a good half way point. Manningtree and Colchester are too far into the sticks for me. I figure I can do one day a week working from home and motorbike into work door to door in about 45 minutes so comparable time.
Just worried about the sprog picking up a towie accent/tan

  • Can anyone recommend a good full-service removals firm (London-Manchester, 2-bed flat's worth of life)?

  • Chelmsford is fine, in fact I’d say a better Essex commuter town than any other.

I went to school there and grew up in Romford.

Brentwood is a lot more TOWIE than Chelmsford is, Chelmsford finally has its city status and while it’s not that much more diverse, it’s definitely got a greater variety of attractions and entertainment.

It’s also a much better commute into London, you’re closer to the north Essex countryside, and the good bits of Essex coast. There’s even a decent family run butcher in Broomfield, and also a place that makes jerky!

Yes the train is busy but it’s going to be like that everywhere, my boss commutes in from Chelmsford and he gets the 07:00 train to get a seat and then goes to they gym when he gets in.

It’s a chunky cycle but you could do it one way.

  • ahem
    Chellie is ace.

  • Plus, you might bump into Alex Dowsett.

  • I'd live in Essex in a heartbeat.

  • Last movers we used were Pickfords, and they were fantastic. It helped that the OH's job was paying, but if I had to move tomorrow I'd find a way to scrape together the cash for proper removers - so much less stressful.

  • Bro in law lived in Brentwood for 2 years. Commuted to east London for work. Absolutely hated everything about it, the white van men, racists, chain bars, crap pubs, expensive commute. He had a decent sized semi with a 100 ft garden but was so fed up with it all he purchased the house behind me in Leytonstone. He now has a house half the size and a garden a quarter of the size of what he used to have but is now much happier.

  • Can imagine. These parts however. Lovely.
