What camera do I buy? / general gear talk

  • Does it still work out that if I'm not buying lenses I can get a bridge camera or aren't they a thing anymore?

If going DSLR do I just want to buy a body with decent sensor and then slap a off brand lens kit on it(what I remember doing with film back in the day)?

  • You could get a bridge camera but it won’t be good for shooting bikes. Small sensors, slow (zoom) lenses.

You want a short tele ~ 85mm effective. And sharp results ~ f2.8. Standard on-brand f1.8 lenses will give you that and fast AF.

If you have old standard lenses that’s maybe a way to go. Pentax still use k mount. Canons can fit a range of old lenses with adapters. It can be slow getting focus and exposure sorted using old lenses as all but top end dslrs or mirrorless aren’t good for that.

  • Thanks, I'll look out for those

  • micro 4/3 sensors are a bit shit tho, iphone is better

  • Really, are they that bad.

  • Was looking at an Olympus E410 as a small lightweight camera to play with.

  • if i get something like the a5000 with a compact/pancake lens, how much difference will i notice over my canon g7x (1st gen)?

  • I'm thinking of another 5d2 after yet another early body death situation. Currently have a 40d from aboit 2010 (warranty replacement that I never used. Then when my 5d2 died I dug it our and started using it) only has 6k shutter drop on iy and now it won't focus. Tried all the things, it's an internal protocol or physical problem with the chip that drives the focus. More £££ to possibly fix than camera is worth by a factor of 3x lol

Always liked 5d2, cpuld go another. Mine died at 110k shutter drops and had other issues (water ingress, corrosion, cracked Lcd, kept showing battery was empty when it wad fine) so not worth fixing.
If I get a "used" 100-200k shutter drop 5d2 from wex or similar what are their actual warranty like. I'd want to see 6months use (which for me now is prob only 5-10k shots and no video) with all bases covered, am I being ridiculous to expect that?

  • I've had one of these & been thoroughly impressed with it. Even preferred the video quality to the comparable GoPro.

  • 5d2 or 6d in similar condition and shutter count (20-50k)?

I figured 6d is a full generation newer, slightly smaller and lighter, but the 5d2 handles better (I would miss the af pointer thing that all higher tier canons have had for decades?).
Until now I always thought the 6d was a crop sensor, never realised it was full frame. Was hoping that the new 6d2 has been out a while and used prices would drop.
Found a place that does 12 month warranty on used dslr over £300 value which is nice. Most reseller places appear to sell at much thr same price as private and knowing my track record of dslr premature dying on me would be nice to have.

Would be putting a 17-40l a 42/50 fast prime and a 70-200l (old old version) infront of it if that makes a difference

  • Got a 6D. It wipes the floor when it comes to noise and high iso. 5D2 has banding.

Autofocus is better on the 6D as well. The 6D2 isn't much improved sensor-wise so I think that's why the OG has held its value somewhat.

The wifi is genuinely useful, too.

  • I've got a 6D, its an excellent camera. I haven't owned a 5D2 but I've used one and I'd take the 6D over the two. Don't be fooled by it being lighter and what not, that's due to the body being made of more plastic to allow the wifi to work.
Its very good with noise and in lower light

  • Is there an equivalent of the Fuji f 1.4 23mm lense for a Canon DSLR? I think it's a 500D.

  • Is the significantly cheaper HSM version total shit and to be avoided?

  • no idea tbh, I don't SLR. Good lenses don't depreciate in value

  • Looking for a Pentacon 50mm lens (with an adapter / m42?) for a Canon 6d - anyone have one?

  • I’d like to get a cheap film slr. Would an Olympus OM20 be a good option? It seems small and has an in built light meter which is what I’d like. Seen a few that are in good condition going for around 40 on the bay.

If it's a 500D (or any other non-full frame Canon SLR) this will be pretty much perfect:

You'll find myriads of cameras like that, in that price range, from all the manufacturers.
They all "do the job" basically; image quality has more to do with the lens(es) you attach to the bodies.
If you have good lenses already you might just go buy a body you can use them with.
Like with the compact cameras it pretty much boils down to personal preference in the end.

  • Nice, thanks for your help. I appreciate it!

  • You're welcome!
