Hi,
I need to buy some digital cameras for my media class at school. I have a £400 budget. I'm thinking of buying 5 of these - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-digital-slr-cameras/used-canon-digital-slr-cameras/canon-eos-400d/
I am unsure what is the best lens to get with the remaining £230. Can anyone advise me from this list please? https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-lenses/used-canon-fit-lenses/
Or, is another brand or a different camera better?
Thanks!

....my media class at school.
I am unsure what is the best lens to get with the remaining £230.Contact the school and ask.
I would suggest a basic kit lens, like one of the 18-55s and a fast prime, like the 50mm f/1.8 II. Though that all depends on what you will be doing. For example, you could equally do a lot with just the 28mm f/1.8.

Cheers, sorry should have been clearer - I’m the teacher (it’s not my specialism)! Need to buy some for the students.
Also, ideally I’d like the same lens for all students so I can demo it more easily.

This explains why you wanted x5 cameras :D
What/where do you want to demonstrate?
The 18-55 IS kit lens will struggle in low light/indoors but is cheap and usable outdoors and this model comes with stabalisation.
https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-lenses/used-canon-fit-lenses/canon-ef-s-18-55mm-f-4-5-6-is-stm/You could get 2 lenses and pair this with the also very cheap 50mm f/1.8 II that is better in low light and good at demonstrating large aperture lenses / shallow depth of field / portrait style images. The field of view could be a little long for it to be a single lens.
https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-lenses/used-canon-fit-lenses/canon-ef-50mm-f-1-8-ii/I started with this combo, the 50mm taught me a lot.

You're probably mostly limited by price and availability rather than having much choice

Definitely! These look doable. Thanks!

Mostly they will be taking photos to be used as front covers for magazines they’re making. Maybe I need to add a some flashes to the list too.

18-55 kit lens, some 430EX speedlites and loads of powerful rechargeable AA batteries would be good. Could throw in some off-camera shoe cords or speedlite transmitters to allow for more creative lighting.

I want to buy a new camera - a Fuji
Options for body are:
X-T30 / X-T30 ii - £769
X-E4 - £799
X-T3 - £1149
Whichever I get, I would get a pancake lens for it, probably the Fujifilm XF 27mm f2.8 R WR Lens
Should I just buy the most expensive one?
-
• #3161
the opposite no? if the sensors are all the same?
-
• #3162
If you want to buy a camera for that lens, the X-E4 bundle adds only £150.
https://www.wexphotovideo.com/fujifilm-x-e4-digital-camera-with-xf-27mm-wr-lens-black-1765638/If you want one small lens only, maybe look at the x100v. Wex have a few second hand options.
-
• #3163
Yes, that bundle is good value. London Camera Exchange have a similar deal.
-
• #3164
What are you doing with the files? I'm perfectly happy with a X-E2 and X100S, but then I'm posting on the interwebs and printing no bigger than A3 (mostly A4).
-
• #3165
mainly lfgss photocomp, few family snaps
likewise not printing anything very big
-
• #3166
Probably whatever is the cheapest then? I'd also consider a X100 series if you want to use a pancake lens (and don't mind a fixed focal length).
If I had to bin all my cameras and keep one, it would probably be my X100(S).

The AF on my Canon 16-35 has just packed up, can anyone recommend someone to repair it? I'm London based, but happy to send it off too.

Am looking at getting either the X100F or the X100v, ruled out the X-E4 on the basis I already have an X-T3 but want something a bit smaller to lug and not have to worry that I haven't got the right lens with me when out wild camping.

Hello.
Long shot here
Does anyone know their way around a ricoh grd menu?
My screen broke and I need to switch the menu to RAW or any “good” format waiting for my screen replacement.
If anyone can walk me through each step I will appreciate it.

Looking for an ND filter for an UWA lens.
Reading that variable NDs can negatively affect the image on shorter focal lengths (and this is for a 10-20mm)
Is this true of all NDs or just variables? -
• #3172
When you say negatively affect the image, do you mean vignetting? Which can be an issue but easier to fix in post. Colour shift? An issue not related to focal length but again ok to deal with in post. Or the X type affect? I think that is mainly an issue with variable ND's at UWA focal lengths and is a nightmare to deal with.
-
• #3173
Not entirely sure. X affects were mentioned in 1 review, but it also said:
Variable NDs can create unwanted effects with ultra-wide lenses, so longer focal lengths are best.
I think that answers my question really.
As it is would be on a 10-20 (admittedly on an APS-C sensor) I was wondering what my options would be.
Doesn't need to be variable, might just spring for a few of various strengths ND filters

Apologies if this isn't the done thing but does anyone want 2 soft boxes I'm looking to get rid of?
Freecycle, collection from Dalston.
2 x 50cm x 70cm
comes with stands and bulbs (daylight, continuous)They were cheap when i bought them a few years ago and since then have been used a few times but mostly just sat gathering dust.

OK cool, I could make use of those I think.
PM incoming...
Had a Nikon D750 for a couple years now maybe 4 or so and its been a great camera but since the D850 came out ive wanted one. Found one last week for a very decent price so gonna take the plunge.
Anyone using the 850 in the real world and rates it?
