I've finally decided to stop twating about and buy a camera. My budget is tiny (relatively speaking for this thread), I had settled on £150, but found a couple of Canons just over that, so I'd like honest opinions please of my choices:

1. Canon Ixus 285
   Or,
   
2. Canon Powershot SX 430

Always buy Ixus.

Before you say you want to try manual controls just use CHDK on the Ixus.

Forgot to ask, what's your reasoning for recommending the IXUS over the Powershot?

I assume you haven’t been into a store and handled them?

Only the top level G-series Powershot are worth considering. Otherwise an Ixus is way better in every respect (weight, portability, quality), the manual controls and stupidly large zoom they put on Powershot models is just not worth it.

By the way, from ‘07-‘11 (or was it ‘12?) I was a Canon RSR (in-store rep) so I handled loads of the older models over a few years. The Ixus always won out.

I’d always say go into a shop and try them first rather than trust online people. All the same, Ixus are great. And yes, CHDK when you’re feeling fruity.

Ixus in Canada/US is called PowerShot, although I think ‘Elph’ is added for differentiation. So confusing.

Bit difficult at the moment, will order one, kinda what I'm after anyway, small enough to take on a ride in a pocket/handlebar bag, decent zoom, and wifi.

Looks like I'll be getting a Gariz leather half case for my XH1 for 25 euro including shipment.

Going to have a look at the exif data and see what the picture count is. Just kit 18 55 zoom and no IS.

Maybe I'll take both cameras out and go for a play....or not.
