  • Do you think less of a photo if it's been taken by a phone ?

  • No. Pixels are pixels..
I think less of most electronics manufactures, Apple especially.

  • ^ I've got quite a lot of Peak Design stuff and think it's all very well made, well designed. It's not the cheapest but everything I've got I use often and it's survived being beaten around.

  • It really looks like it's well thought through, especially the (un)use of dead space. But $600 retail for the carbon one makes me lol

  • Can anyone tell me how I would calculate the equivalent lens width for the vertical dimension of my frame?

    Lens is 24mm prime.
    sensor is full frame.
    Aspect ratio is 2:3

    would it just be 24*(24/36)=16mm?

    edit: 24*(36/24)=36mm?

  • Leica M Monochrom Lenny Kravitz/Stella Macartney 'Drifter' for £20k anyone ?
I guess Leica know their audience.

  • In a rush before London tomorrow, assisting a shoot on Monday...bought some flash accessories from ebay, and arranged collection locally. It turned out to be Robert Fairer and wife Vanessa. /csb

  • Kravitz, nailing the shot #stealth #streetphoto #pukesoncock

  • Is Northrup's Stunning Digital Photography a decent book for a complete noob?

  • What are you trying to learn ? I’ve generally found taking a shit ton of photos whilst also looking at other peoples photos is more instructional than most technical books.

  • I liked this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Exposure-Fourth-Photographs-Camera/dp/1607748509/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

Gives you a decent understanding of the basics and plenty of illustrations to show you what the differences are.

  • Want to get a camera to start taking pics again, previously had a canon 20d with a 50mm f1.4 which I loved but never used as it was too much of a pain to lug around and ultimately sold when I was skint.

Looking for something a bit more compact that can take interchangeable lenses now.

I vaguely recall everyone seemed to like the panasonic lumix and 'pancake' lens a few years back but it seems this area of the market is saturated with competing systems now and I haven't got a clue.

budget up to about £600 for body/body&kit lens and ideally with some well-respected low f-stop prime lenses available in that mount system for £150-250 a pop.

subjects would include tabletop games (whole table shots so pretty wide) and macro shots of game pieces amongst other more typical uses.

what makes and model ranges should I be looking at in my searches? what should I avoid like the plague?

  • Micro 43 (Olympus and Panasonic) has loads of respected compact lenses.

    Loads smaller than most DSLRs.

Lumix 14mm f2.5, 25mm f1.7 and Olympus 45mm f1.8 can be had for about £350-400, with say a Lumix gx80 which can be found for around £250.

    20mm f1.7 pancake is the most recommended lens, I prefer the 15mm f1.7 and 25mm f1.7.

  • That's really helpful, thanks.

  • If you want small good quality compact prime lenses, I reckon M43 is the way to go.

Your Canon kit weighed about 1kg, the GX80 (if you like rangefinder style) with 20mm f1.7 is about half that.

With each of the smaller primes weighing around 100-150g, you could carry loads.

Main downside is the slightly lower image quality than full frame and APS-C.

  • Main downside is the slightly lower image quality than full frame and APS-C.

Image quality is relative, depends on what you're doing. Shooting in low light and printing at A3 or greater, you might need to be choosy with your sensor size. Otherwise, pretty much anything is good enough.
I mostly just use my phone now for digital, quality is perfectly fine for the internets and printing at A4

  • Continuing on phones... there's my Nikon F801 with Tri-X in it sitting on the table whilst I'm taking photos with my phone instead

  • Also worth looking at some of the Sony ones, something like an Alpha 6000 (not sure what the current model is). Good cameras with a big APS-C sensor and a good amount of decent lenses.

  • You can still buy the A6000 new, nothing wrong with this camera at all and quite compact with a pancake, smaller 35mm or manual lens if you swing that way.

  • This has probably been discussed before, but what's a good camera strap for cycling with? Something that holds the camera in the right place without it flipping about

  • I have a Sony alpha 6000 for sale with bunch of lenses and accessories.
Ideally I'd like to sell the whole lot for £800.
PM me if interested and we can work something out.
