  • Great link! In answer to my question (at 3m focus distance) its roughly: 50mm/F1.8/full frame, 33mm/F1.2/APS-C and 105mm/F3.5/6x7 all for the 'same' photo. Interesting

^ this is good. It does flash calculations too ... which in-combo is pretty useful if you use manual cameras.

  • Unless you're lots of portraits shallow DOF isn't that useful. For biking I would be looking for the following rate form factor, then stabilisation, then sensor size.

  • This is from my sony rx100, I dunno if it's a good example of it, but I did this without knowing much of photography at all. It seems fairly good at shallow dof

  • I'd probably go for the GX9 (or the GX80 which is good, and cheap) purely for the sensor stabilisation. One of the main reasons for getting a micro 4/3 camera

End up going for a Fujifilm XF10, I'm starting to realised having a camera as big as my old X100 likely not to get used as much as my phone, so a compact small 28mm camera seemed to be an idea travelling camera (especially the digital 35mm and 50mm crop).

  • I don't think she'll be shooting whilst moving on the bike.

She shoots a lot of landscapes (during the day's journey) and some candids/portraits at dinner or whatever in the evenings, typically indoors and in low light.

  • This is from my sony rx100.

The RX100 is an excellent camera, more so by the recent one with a big aperture throughout the zoom, having said that, 3+ meters yield a less obvious depth of field if you're into that sort of thing.

  • Personally, I'd go with a fixed wider lens and then crop. Not ideal, but a better compromise than a zoom.

    This.

This is what I have been doing on my phone, snap and crop, bit of editing and work equally well, especially with a high megapixels.

  • GRII pretty much tick all the box, especially with wireless connection to send photo to your phone and edit them without needing a computer.

  • I've never had anything else but I love my mkii

  • Unless you're lots of portraits shallow DOF isn't that useful. For biking I would be looking for the following rate form factor, then stabilisation, then sensor size.

Absolutely. Sometimes big depth of field from a crop sensor is great. On a m4/3 sensor being able to shoot wide open in low light and still get a good depth of field is useful for everything other than portraits.

If I want shallow depth of field, I shoot 35mm or 120 film. Digital hasn't got to the price/ form factor to make 'full frame' worth it for me.

  • I read something that said there was a reason the 6D1 wasn't good for astro

    Literally unuseable.

  • not sure if sarcasm?

  • Yeah, a little. In all seriousness, it may not actually be the best camera for that stuff due to infrared filter strength etc - I really wouldn’t know. It gets by, though.

  • Interestingly there was a used 6D IR available from MPB or Ffordes when I was searching.

The 7D2 arrives today and I'm pretty pumped.

  • I've got an old 1000d that's had its IR filter removed and that's great for some Astro stuff but I really like the look of the low noise/high ISO capabilities of the 6d.

  • Bought a GH4 in the end, used it a fair bit and began to get the hang of it. Really like it, neewfound respect for the guys who make super high end videos whilst on tour (most stuff on Bikepacking.com). Must have to factor in a ton of extra time to set up shots properly. Riding always took precedence on this trip but still had plenty of opportunities to get the GH4 out over the weeks! Thanks for all the advice, this is the output:

  • Panasonic 25mm f1.7 for dirt cheap price on Amazon, cheap enough to buy on a whim to compare with my 20mm.

The 20mm is actually a bit too small on my g80 for handling, and the slower autofocus can’t quite keep up with my mongoose like child...

  • Niiiice!

Some really nice exposures in there and even a bit of ramped slow-mo!

A bike, the open road and a bit of Gang Starr to go with, what more could you want.

  • Any suggestions for good dividers, wraps, etc so can use a normal bag as a camera bag?

  • domke wrap

  • I bought one if these which is perfect for 4/3 body plus zoom, and another pancake plus batteries etc:

  • Currently looking into buying a mirrorless camera, most likely used. Any recommendations in the ~ price range of an a6000? Would like to have focus peaking and an evf, not too many other requirements (decent high-iso performance would be nice, but not necessary).

  • My 6D and 35mm & 85mm just got nicked. Bag was pinched at a pub on Tottenham Court Road. Sad face.
