I think he just started as a rather thoughtless asshole and was initially surprised by the reactions. He ended well on his way to becoming one because he enjoyed the reactions. But he got banned for flat out bigotry, not "trolling".

He's wholly cynical, doesn't believe in a word he's saying as anything other than a signifier of his belonging in his chosen cultural group. Notice he didn't engage with a single point - he skips, evades, misrepresents, anything but actually dig into a point in a way that suggests he has a desire to reach a new understanding.

What he wants is the discussion, to get people to engage with his "reasonable concerns on immigration" etc, which validates populist racism without a hope of converting him, or any of his ilk really.

That many share his tribal views is a problem for sure - but it won't be cured by debating charmless products like Thom, it'll be done by tackling the societal problems that created him.

If you are discussing subject a, ('a' Being a complex multi-faceted issue) and someone repeatedly shifts the topic to 'z' with this being that absolute fundamental intrinsic value of just one facet of 'a' they are a fucking troll and impossible to argue with.

You don't need to talk about feudalism to talk about brexit, and you don't need to talk about murdering opinions when the people you are defending have not only threatened but commited literal murder.

Working in a 95%+ online industry where trolls make money for trolling, you learn to spot them a mile off.

It was pretty obvious, but again, I think most people did not have much else to discuss here and in the end he was wasting his own time just as much.
