Tram overturned in Croydon this morning, 5 dead
-
• #105
Utterly horrible. Seven now dead, with warnings that the number may rise. Dozens injured.
The worst train crash since Southall (mainline train) in 1997.

The worst train crash since Southall (mainline train) in 1997.
^ That was not true--I'd forgotten about this one:
Wednesday’s crash is the worst accident on the rail and tram networks since 2004, when seven people were killed in a rail crash near Ufton Nervet in Berkshire, when a car driver trying to kill himself caused a serious accident. There have been no fatalities on board a tram in the UK since 1959, when two female passengers and the driver died when a tram caught fire in Shettlestone Road, Glasgow, after a collision with a lorry.

Really awful still says at least 7 meaning there could possibly be more. Heard reports the driver may have fallen asleep or passed out.
-

I was surprised to see that, particularly given how relatively modern they are, the trams don't have automatic braking systems.
It seems that curve should be negotiated at 12mph and the tram was doing 40mph. Surely that's the kind of thing you'd expect to be designed out. I guess that may well be an upshot of the investigation.

Wasn't sure where to put this but it seems the Kirkstall fatality in Leeds was filmed, or the aftermath was, there is apparently footage that Facebook have deemed acceptable. I dunno if it was street-racing fans or just passers by.
Sergeant Ann Drury, of West Yorkshire Police Major Collision Enquiry
Team, said: "We are aware of very graphic video footage taken by
bystanders at the fatal road traffic collision in Kirkstall Road,
Leeds, on Monday night, that is being shared on social media. "We
would ask that those who have posted such footage and those who are
considering sharing it further think very carefully about the impact
this will have on the family of the man who died and show them
suitable respect at what is clearly a very difficult time." -

This is also horrible:
Utterly rotten luck. RIP Joanna.

Allegedly another sleeping driver. Unbelievable.

This was in the news some time ago, but here's another article about it:
Crashes like this (young people driving home after going to festivals/discos, etc.) have long been a major problem in the countryside in Germany, and I suppose it must have been similar in other countries. There have been horrible tragedies, such as when small cars with eight people crammed into them have crashed, with no chance of survival for anyone inside.

Also this from last week:
I hope he makes it, but at the age of over 80, I fear his chances are probably slim. :(
Disembodied language in the reporting:
A man is fighting for life after his mobility scooter collided with a van outside Parliament.

The victim of the above crash, who has sadly died, has been named:

There seem to have been an awful lot of bus-pedestrian crashes recently. This is the latest:
Best wishes to all the victims.

Another one, another coach:
I don't know if it's just that pedestrian deaths are being reported better or if it is a particularly bad time.
RIP unknown victim.

Yet another bus/pedestrian crash:
This one in Bloomsbury Way, which has a very poor layout.
Just highlighting these as they seem to be so frequent(ly reported) at the moment. I don't know if they're actually up statistically.

• #118
It seems completely unclear what happened here:
Perhaps the driver wandered off in shock. I wonder if there will be a follow-up story.

And yet another bus-pedestrian crash:

Bus-pedestrian:
I can't remember noticing so many reports of this type of crash in such a short time before--still no idea if it's just more coverage or a real increase. Not good either way.

One a cyclist, apparently, reports the Ferrari was racing a Range Rover.
-
• #123
The story has now been changed to say that seven people were taken to hospital.
'Five were treated for minor injuries and discharged. Two remain in hospital and officers await an update on their condition.'
Follow-up story:

A horrible crash in Willesden, with an allegedly drunk driver possibly driving his car onto a footway:
