Swede here. SJ (State owned rail company) hate bikes and do everything to keep them off their trains. Which is ironic considering we try to be bicycle friendly with a lot of other great cycling infrastructure. Taking a whole bike is generally a no-go and you will have to disassemble it and cover it up with plastic bags or something in order not to be kicked off.. Still it's a gamble.
It sucks bigtime. The option is by plane (narvik-stockholm is faar) or bus but you will still have to cover the bike up.

I think we're gonna have to risk it - I've heard that if you dismantle and pack it small enough (120cm max, they said), then it's not an issue. We'll probably have to disguise it with a tarp or something to make it a little less obvious.
Yeah flying would be such a mission as we'd have to get 3 planes: Narvik>Bodo>Oslo>Stockholm.. And we looked into renting a car for 3 days, and the cost is £1250 minimum!!
I'm feeling confident that it'll work out... But if not, are Swedish train guards partial to a cheeky bribe..?

Its bloody expensive to take bikes on Norwegian trains. I know that much.

Really backwards, I couldn't believe it when I phoned up.

Yeah, we're booked on the sleeper from Olso to Trondheim with bikes and it was half as much as the tickets themselves to add bikes.

We had to leave Ours lent against each other in a separate goods wagon. Which we werent happy about. The ticket collector acted like it it was some sort of persoanl insult that we had them in the first Place.
Good old Norwegian service.
Pricey and not very Nice.

My experience with service in Scandinavia so far is that having an English accent is pretty useful.
We're gonna have to risk it with the train and do our best 'nice foreign idiots' routine and cross our fingers. Even if it's pricey in Norway, you can guarantee you'll actually be able to get on the bloody train!

My fluent Norwegian suddenly disappears if I need helpful service.

Oops. Bit late to this.
Trains in Norway can be silly cheap. https://www.nsb.no/togbilletter/minipris
So maybe you can just forget about your evil Swedish tickets and book an entire new journey.I've ridden the train from Bodø to Oslo, a distance longer than London-Geneva, for £25 with no extras.

In case anyone was following this and is still on the edge of their seat wondering if we got on the train to Stockholm - everything went perfectly.
The ride up Norway was amazing, we completely avoided the E6 and opted for the coastal road which takes in some breathtaking views on some of the nicest roads I've ever cycled on. We've been asked to do a proper write up soon, but for now all that's needed is ...... 10/10 would ride again.

do you have a strava route map or similar?
-
• #43
Nope. We made it up as we went along and weren't tracking it, but I might take a stab at mapping the route.

damn that was good. made me want to go back to lofoten so much.
Ok. I've fucked up a bit and need some advice.
We were waiting for train tickets to become available and for some reason failed to realise that the train we intend to get from Narvik to Stockholm is entirely run by Swedish Rail and has a completely different bike policy.
We've already booked the trains, including sleeper bunks - but the whole of Swedish Rail has a strict no bike policy (Really should've figure this out sooner).
I spoke to a guy about taking bikes on and he said that 120cm was the maximum length of any part of the bike in order to not block the exits.
has anyone had any experience of going on Swedish trains by dismantling bikes? If we take the forks off then we should be below the size limit, but it's a bit of a risk. There aren't really any other reasonable options for getting to Stockholm.
Fuck.
