  • I ride flats on most of my bikes (not on fixed) and I prefer the large platform style of pedal. Even with a toeclip fitted I can't comfortably ride the quill/ratrap style pedals

because I feel like my feet are falling off the side of them.

I'm a big fan of DMR V12s though I've never thought they were worth the rrp so have always bought them used. I have one set that's must be about 14years old now, have been used on everything from bmx bikes to commuters and have never been opened up, lubricated, had any pins replaced or really ever been cleaned. I've owned a few sets of V8s too but wouldn't put them in the same class, the V12 is well worth the price premium.

The Wellgo DX shape pedals are almost as good as the DMRs and a fraction of the cost. I have bought a few sets of them new. Again though, don't bother with the open bearing version, go sealed.

I've also used those Odysseys in my last post, sharkbites, loads of metal bmx flats (primo etc) and a few random sets of plastic bmx pedals, and a few sets of the Odyssey Twisted plastics.

The Twisteds are the only plastic pedal I'd pay for now and I've currently got a set on my bmx. The grip is close to thatof the V12s and they are good for using with straps like Restrap etc as you can easily carve off pins to make getting in and out of the straps a bit easier.

I've got a set of Eastern (Ithink) plastic platforms on my shopping bike but they ain't at all great in the wet.

  • I'm leaning towards the Shimano Saint for my flat needs:

I quite like (and use) the MKS GR-10 but they're for use with clips and straps:

  • Been using the Arcane super flat resin pedals for about two years. They've migrated from one bike to another, and work well with Gusset straps. Bit slippy in bad weather wearing DC's or Airwalks, but the strap's there for a reason.

Destroyed a pair of moccasins within one short ride, though.

  • White Industries.

  • I believe that Decathlon are doing flats now.
Also have a look at Rose. Cycle Touring is very popular in Germany and they have an interesting selection of flats including their own brand with sealed bearings...

  • They look like a pair of Bear trap MTB pedals from 1985...

  • I'm leaning towards the Shimano Saint...

After trying the modern DX I'll not be buying Shimano flats again in a hurry.

  • Yeah the Penthouse, I have the MK2 and 3's. Both have took a hell of beating over the years and are still going strong. Think they might be onto MK4 now and have a lipless pedal too

  • Care to elaborate on the bad Shimano pedal experience?

  • Those WI pedals look pretty slick, like an upscale MKS Urban Platform:

And I really like these VO Grand Cru ones:

  • Didn't find them very grippy at all, even with longer pins and had issues with getting pins out, threads stripping, pins getting torn out with light bumps on rocks.

  • I have those, avoid.

They're better than the MKS, but not as grippy it look, even with clip & strap & normal vans slip on.

  • I really like Stolen thermalites

  • Stolen thermalites

Price made it very very attractive, however is the bearing sealed?

  • Choose any flat pedal,
    remove the offending bits/pins,
    lay some skateboard grip.

  • Agreed. My avoidance of them is based solely on the price.

  • AtomLab Aircorp pedals were the business, no idea if there current range is as good mind you

  • Bloody Triple Traps! Had them and was vrai disappoint.

Nowhere near as grippy as they look. Outer cage deforms if it gets a solid whack and retaining screws work loose.

    Avoid.

  • Wow, concise.

You're allowed to use up to 140 characters.

  • What about cycling specific shoes for flat pedals? I had been using a pair of Lidl SPD ones with the cleats plate taken out and they've been fine but they are about to die, let water in in heavy rain and looked gash.

  • Any LBS will have some for you, just head to any direction and you'll find a shop.

  • Well, it's a good question, in theory you should be able to use any shoes, some company sell cycling specific shoes like Merrell, abet not many choices due to the popularity of clipless touring shoes.

Best I found are shoes like the Vans Authentic that's great for touring with flat pedals.

Adidas original Gazelle got my vote too.

  • Yeah, I do use my normal shoes in the summer (or dry weather) but I find that my boots aren't comfy for riding in weather that isn't good. The Lidil shoes I had were basically Merrell rip off with rubbish SPD attachements. Going to look at some downhill flat shoes like Teva & Five Ten.

  • Not cycling specific but about 90% of my mtbing is done in these

About 90% of my commuting was done in them too but recently have put spds back on my Pompino so not wearing for that as much.

Cost about £30 from Sportsdirect, are actually pretty waterproof but water will get in the top if splashed or will soak in through your tights etc.

  • You can't find a shop that sell pedals?

    In London?
