What are 47mm slicks like. I'm trying to figure out what I want for long distance bike packing.
I have previously done it on an early 80's Bianchi racer with 25s. Which fucked with the nerves in my palms and fingers. I also didn't like being confined to tarmac. So I then did it on my 90's Marin mtb with 26" 2.2 slicks which was more comfy :•) What I missed was the gearing and the speedier ride.
I havn't really ridden a modern race bike. But tried a CDF which felt like a greased lightning compared to my old Bianchi. This summer I'm doing a 2000+km ride and would like to find a new bike for this occasion. Sooo here I am looking for advice on 650b for road riding purposes.

I absolutely love my 47c WTB Horizons. They were great on a London to Bergen tour I did last year. They're pretty quick on the road and I've not punctured in over 5000 miles and they still look like new!

+1 here for 47mm Horizons. I use them on my commuter/adventure-type biek and really rate them. Pretty plush, quick enough and can handle gravel, tow paths and fire roads very nicely indeed. I have them mounted on wide MTB rims, so not sure how they work on narrower rims mind.

Thanks for sharing! I hope this is my sweet spot.

Fucking amazing with tubeless and light wheels.

So I dont have to worry it will slow me down?
-
• #2311
Nah, you’re just slow.

In all seriousness, the skinny high pressure tyres feel good cause of the conventional wisdom of road buzz = fast.
Bigger lower pressure tyres remove this nearly entirely, that riding at a steady 15mph feel disconcerting and slow in comparison.Having said that, 47mm is definitely the sweet spot between comfort, speed and weight (tubeless).
Much to my surprise, the 47/8mm slick work really well off road in all but muddy conditions.

Yea, ive read the Jan Heine evangelium. Its just hard to swallow...
Sweet bike btw!

I've got a set of WTB 47mm slicks on my wheels now. Haven't ridden yet though but they should be more fun than ploughing into potholes and what's left of British roads than 25mm road tyres.

Well yes, why would you ride a bicycle here?

Yea, ive read the Jan Heine evangelium. Its just hard to swallow...
Yeah it's very evangelistic, but there is a veiled truth to his gospel, just not the right way of doing it.

I think a lot of the perceived slugglishness of 40mm+ tyres is the inertia in accelerating - if you try stand up and push a load of that effort goes straight into the give in the tyres. Once up to speed they're great though.

• #2320
Yes, minor inconvenience when youre riding far I guess.

Moreso with 700c,
It take a noticeable amount of effort to ride on 700c 64mm tyres.

Anyone looking for a kick ass set of 650b gravel wheels and tubeless tyres?

• #2323
considering the love-in above, has anyone found their Horizons pretty slippy? I've just taken a wee spill, and it's the 3rd time my WTBs have slipped out from under me. There have been extenuating circumstances in each situation, but nothing else I ride slips about or even loses traction...
-
• #2324
The very first ride on them I did I slid out on a roundabout. Not had any other troubles in 5000 odd miles since though.

I feel like riding 47c tyres at about 25psi shouldn't slip out from under me 3 times in maybe 3000km. Might replace them when money allows
Why don't you focus on your current 650b bike project eh
