  • sorry for spamming loads of threads. not sure where best to post this. hope you all understand

Just had some bad news that our dearest @spotter has had a nasty off cycling back from work today. He woke up in hospital and can't remember anything from the past week. he seems to be healing up but his bike has gone missing. he was most likely riding this genesis - if anyone sees it please get in touch with me or @JB or @robadob

  • Shit! Hope he's ok and mends well. Hope somebody's done the right thing and handed his bike in, as unlikely as that is.

  • Fuck. Heal up @spotter

  • I doubt bikes are designed around pedal convenience dude...

Agree, but you can see how a designer may have this in consideration in designing the geometry of the bike.

  • As many 650b MTB wheels are made with a 10 speed freehubs body, mean 11 speed won’t work.

Except recently Shimano release a 11-34t Ultegra cassette that spaced out for 10 speed, meaning with the new Ultegra R8000 rear derailleur or even the 105 5800 long cage, you can have not only a normal MTB rear wheel but in a wide range.

The catch? The 11-34t cassette is expensive.

  • mtb 11s cassettes fit on 10s freehub, so you can go even wider.

EDIT: I forgot you speak about Shimano, and they don't have any road compatible derailleur that works with bigger cassettes.

  • They do.

The Shimano R8000 long cages derailleur is designed for 11-34t cassette (CS-HG800), moreso the cable pull is the same as the previous 6800 et all.

Depending on the bicycle hanger, you may get a long cage 105 5800* to work with the new 11-34t (obviously from a mechanic point of view, wouldn't recommend it).

    The range is pretty good, almost an old school jump between each gear with an extra oomph on the biggest range;

    11-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-27-30-34

*The Specialized Sequoia cleverly have a very long derailleur hanger enabling the long cage 5800 derailleur to work with an aftermarket 11-36t cassette, for those with a Sequoia, would this mean the new Ultegra may work with the 11-40t?

  • By bigger I meant rather 40/42t. And I doubt Shimano would make it, since they don't have any 1x road/cx/gravel groupset, and with 2x, 34/34 gives pretty low ratio.

  • They do, XTR derailleur with Di2 hydraulic levers.

  • yeaahhh...it's still not ready made groupset, it just shows needs of customers, that have to mix and match. With Sram, you just buy one groupset and it just works. No combinations.

    anyway

  • If anyone's interested I'm selling a 650b wheel set. (Bought from Dick on Thursday but rims are a little too wide from my (road) frame.

  • Anyone got a review of the Byways as opposed to Gravelkings?

Feeling the need for moar rubber

  • Do you know where you can buy the Byways in the UK?

  • haven't tried to buy them yet, so no.

  • Anyone know tyre clearances for 650b Surly Straggler?

  • Sorry if this has been answered up thread already, but I was wondering if there's a measurement I can make to see if 650 wheels are an option for a particular frame? The bike in question is in Glasgow so the chances of offering up a wheelset to try and fit it are slim, I guess. It's a 48cm (ie. very small) Condor Italia with a Condor fork, currently with 700x25 shoes.

  • Someone please buy that octane one and tell us how it is. Stack seems pretty low

  • Has anyone here Gravelkings in 650x48? Are they True to size? Also, is SK version much wider on knobs?

  • SKs aren't easily found yet. The UK panaracer distributor has them now so I've asked an LBS if they can order me some.
I did read on a thread from across the pond that they came up as 51 on the knobbles. I don't know what their internal rim measurement was though.

  • Just been to see a mate who's mounted them on the cheapest dt swiss 650b rims, where they came up true to size.

  • Eh? Not that difficult to find. Zyro has a bunch at the moment. Ordered and installed some and they come up as 48's on a 23mm internal rim.

  • Yep, Zyro are the distributor and have them now to be ordered. I meant they weren't easily available in retailers yet. Either way. Good to know about them coming up as 48.

  • FS: I have 2 x Grand Bois Cypres (650b x 32) tyres
Brand new, opened but never fitted.
    £55 for the pair.

  • Thanks, I don't live in UK so I would buy them somewhere else. Has anyone compared them - Gravelkings slick to WTB Horizons?
