  • Yeah, I really need to look at the achievable combinations that won't have big gaps or be under/over geared.

We're going to tap Middleburn up and try and get some RO2's at a sensible price. They have just moved though, so I think they have cleared a bit of old/odd/interesting stock.

I also need to check that cassette too, as even though I said it was 11-30, I think it's actually an XT 11-32 (sorry @Itisaboutthebike )

Will have a scan through the Middleburn website tonight and then see what the cassette actually is on Monday morning

  • Always forget about Middleburn even though I've got a RS8s kicking around somewhere. Lovely cranks.

  • Middleburn reps came to my old shop with this a couples years ago, was tempted to get them to give it to me (46/30);

  • Something like that, possibly in black, would be spot on.

I need to remember to check that cassette tonight.....

  • I've got half a T.A. Carmina crankset that might suit this if you're willing to consider square taper. Non drive side is wrecked but i assume it's possible to get a new arm.

  • cheers matey, I'll wait and see what Matt comes up with first if that's ok, as he's already contacted Middleburn. Also I'd have to think hard about using cranks that you've put your awesome power through previously.

  • I'd have thought that the Rotor's industrial aesthetic would have suited this down to the ground, maybe with a coat of black paint to nuke the logo and tie them into the rims.

  • Personally, I actually think they look a bit over styled. That and they remind me boring Cervelos et al.

  • I disagree - the form is driven entirely by the machining, which makes sense when you have a pair in your hands. I agree, they're not conventionally attractive, but in terms of designed for purpose they do score highly - although of course I would say that, having three pairs.

  • Sugino OX601d cranks are nice too (one 'cheap' set left on eBay)

  • Give over, those wanky grooves have got nothing to do with the machining and even if they have, they look like they don't, which is just as bad.

But very much each to their own, I would never have painted the Dalsnibba grey and pink (and got my sunnies painted to match) and I doubt you would have bought an Eastway, then had it painted like a train :)

It definitely takes all sorts though, doesn't it.

@Tychom hmm, those look like what's on it already I reckon.

EDIT - Sorry, just re-read that and it's a bit tetchy, apologies, I've just heard some really shitty news.

  • @Dammit Ha ha, I stand throughly corrected!

Not to my tastes at all, although in that cross section, they do look like a gun a 7year old me would draw.

  • Looks great built up. Earlier comments retracted :-)

  • i need this light bracket!

  • This one, or the one for fork mounted illumination?

I think the light had to be a specific design to be fork mounted or the throw and pattern of the light doesn't work very well

  • Rear saddle mount, your front wouldn't work on mine with the rack

  • Ah yes the rear, I was wondering about how the front mount would work with your rack.

Matt and Tom made it, it's simple look belies a lot of graft and a terrifying array of bolts, washers and nuts.

    Bloody good though!

  • The cassette is a 11-32 Deore XT job, with 11-12-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-32 on it.

I've had a swiz through some gear charts and 50/34 on the front wouldn't be too jumpy, what do you reckon?

  • Everyone's different, so you may like this ratios when you give it a go.

You do have a reasonable 1t difference until the 25t cog.

  • Cheers, that's really useful matey.

I'd been messing about with my track chart and there were too far too many numbers and other complications to try and work out manually....

@edscoble will give it a bash and see I reckon, cheers

  • Honestly I reckon you'll be fine, if you have been used to massive chainring for eons, then the low to mid range of the cassette will be comforting with the 50t chainring.

If you intend to use that bike for touring at some point in the future, 34/32 is plentiful for loaded alpine climb.

WARNING; continental does not developed similar warning panels on the front of the locomotive/trains so be wary of approaching cyclists whom does not sport such warning.

  • To be honest, I hear that if you want to stay out of hospital on the continent, its the British motorists you need to look out for. Giant-Alpecin have reportedly approached @coldharbour to repaint their headtubes.

I'm in Scotland next week with a small dog in a trailer, or 'the carriage', so I'll give the gears a good going over I'm sure.
