  • Does anyone know if PDW 45/55mm guards fit on a Checkpoint? The fork crown is quite round and my square profile SKS Edge Als (in a 46mm) do not fit. The PDWs are also quite boxy so I'm not sure they're gonna work.

    Maybe @amey ?

    Here's what we're working with

Here's the problem with the fork crown. Any square guard that is wider than the tyre is pretty close to the tallest part of the tyre
  • I have 45mm bluemels on mine, fit absolutely fine

  • Can you shape some depressions into the guards so they fit round the fork area? There was a how-to guide posted somewhere on this forum.

  • 55mm work best on mine.

  • If I can not cut/bend them I'd rather do that. It's thin alu so I think my crude job will probably not lead to a long life

Found this picture in your thread, nice one! I will be buying then

  • Here's a guide to shaping alu guards: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/17134335/

Mine have lasted fine after quite a bit of beating and shaping. I managed to do it without a vice, just some scrap wood and a hammer.

  • Why not get the bontrager one? They probably work alright in a Trek

  • I would stay clear because they don't have break away plastic fittings as evidenced by the 9 stitch scar on my chin.

  • Sorry Ed, I wasn't clear, I was passing the credit to Alb. He did the work on the bikes for a while after I was there. That was when the R+S was revised properly, I think it was 2014?

  • I saw this stigmata with custom northern landmarks paint job on nwmtb this week, very cool, makes me want custom paint off this guy!

  • Perhaps I need my bikes painted with maps of Epping Forest, so that I don't keep getting people lost...

  • I see one of these sometimes coming through Kentish Town. How would it do as winter road bike?

  • I rode a gravel route to Canterbury yesterday.

I had planned to re-ride my latest version of the Brighton and back to Horsham route that I trialled in July but all my riding buddies were doing that work thing so I decided to give a new route a go as I prefer to test out new rides on my own.

The route I had found started at the amusingly named Titsey Hill which is 30 km from my front door so I used the first part of The Bartlett, another route I have already ridden twice this year to get to the aforementioned humorously named hill.

After a chilly start that saw me wearing my rain jacket for the first time since May it soon warmed up. The route is a mix of tarmac and gravel which I haven't checked the data on but felt like circa 50:50 which given the length of the ride was actually quite welcome.

It was a big day out not helped by a few puncture issues but ultimately a great ride. Quite a lot of climbing (1,860 m) particularly Bluebell hill and White hill which was a real kick in the teeth appearing 114 km into a 132 km ride.

Would ride again although certain parts of it would not be fun during a wet winter.

  • Did I kill the gravel thread?

Smashed out another big one today. Used the LDN_GRVL route to ride to Shoreham-by-Sea, fish finger sandwich and chips in town then turned around and rode back to Horsham for the direct train back to Epsom.

    Another 130km in the bag

  • I think I’ve potentially seen you on your return leg of this a couple of times - today perhaps while we both wiggled around a dog walker and stubborn little dog? I was on a rigid mtb, Moloko bars which stand out a little

  • Oh cool, yes I definitely recall the stubborn dog. Were you the guy in black leggings/tracky bottoms who stayed with us for a while?

  • Perhaps I need my bikes painted with maps of Epping Forest, so that I don't keep getting people lost...

You already have a tendency to get tangled in your bike, imagine if you were checking the trails around Monk Woods down the side of your fork!

  • No, I was headed back down to shoreham, so just the standard issue cyclist wave. Morvelo mtb jersey, fork bags on neon orange forks. Was probably about 5 mins before you guys hit henfield

  • Ah yes Morvelo jersey, deffo remember that. Nice one, well lets both keep on waving :-)

Reminds me of this news story a few years ago.

An Australian woman who used daily trips to Richmond Park to help her get over depression has had a map of it tattooed on to her thigh.

The thing that made me laugh was that it was tattooed so she can read it on her own leg but essentially it is upside down for every other person.

There is a local news story site but I won't link it as its the usual shitfest of advertising pop-ups and more adverts than news on the page

  • It’s a good route hey, North Downs way is underrated i reckon.

I did it a couple years ago but am actually possibly planning on doing it again this Saturday but finishing in Whitstable for a the last dip in the sea of summer
