Avoid, get alu or steel instead.

Sticking GRX cranks on the Sequoia. Anyone ran these with an old 11s DA Di2 FD before? I guess no one is that silly. Any bets on if it'll handle the 46-30 / 16T shift?
-
• #30304
Yeah, so looks like the DA FD won't change into the big ring. Something to do with a different offset on the GRX chainrings, right? Presume it's out of the realm of adjustment for the DA FD?
"Generally speaking, the only compatibility concern with GRX is the crankset/front derailleur. Because the chainrings on GRX is ~2mm further outboard than other Shimano cranks, you should pair GRX Cranks and FD. "

GRX rings are 2.5mm further out.

Is zip-tying a flat bar to your drops the next alt bar trend?

Yeah, I remembered that after fitting them.
What about a band-on mount that moves the FD outward? Anyone done one of those? Cheaper than £140 FD.

So, maybe I could adjust it to work?
"I've been using the 46/30T GRX crankset with my Di2 Ultegra 6800 derailleurs.
Briefly, it works, but I had to adjust the H-limit screw to its most extreme outboard position. There was less than 1mm to spare. I have a band-clamp on a straight-gage steel seat tube, so I have the luxury of positioning the derailleur wherever I want it. It was cutting it quite close, so what I recommend is that you first check to make sure that you have about 4mm of H-limit wiggle-room before you try this. (If not, the GRX front derailleur should solve your problem)."

Yeah nah. Doesn't look like it's anywhere near enough adjustment. Sigh.

Been around for a while, SJS have some.

These are not drops added to flat bars, just a second handle bar ziptied on from the looks lol

Thinking out loud.
If it’s a braze on to band on adapter, a 34.9mm diameter clamp on to the I believe 31.8mm (?) seat tube a 3d printed eccentric bush could give you up to an extra 3.1mm to play with?
I could be talking shite here though. -

A newer gen might work, I use an R7000 FD with my GRX 2x setup, not perfect but works 99% of times. I would imagine a Di2 R8000/9000 would work as well?

About to try similar on this Arkose, what's the issue for the 1%...reduced shift ease/response at the x-chaining extremes?
-
• #30315
Maybe, but it's a new FD either way, just maybe a cheaper used solution.
These cranks were originally bound for my Tripster and I THINK that has a newer Ultregra FD but presumably would've had the same problem, but in Poland, so it's kinda nice I found it here where I assume it'll be cheaper to buy a new one.

Precisely
-
• #30317
Why not swapsies for some road cranks, or praxxis or similar if you want the smaller rings but don't need the extra clearance?
-
• #30318
Because I've just installed brand new cranks (that were meant for the Tripster), having got sick of dealing with her old FSA ones and I'd rather not buy yet another set of cranks, especially non-Shimano. The new FD is an annoying but probably more future-proof purchase. I can sell the DA FD or maybe stick it back in the Shiv's parts box in case I ever decide to have a go at the LEJOG record again (ROFL!)

I suppose you don't have spacers in the crank axle to play with, you can bodge it that way if the rings don't touch the frame
-
• #30320
None to hand.
Oh, would an XT FD work or are they also based on 'road' spaced rings?
Half the price of GRX Di2
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175846059817This kinda implies that an XT FD might work:

Which road cranks do 46/30 like a GRX at a siimlar price point (looking at you White Industries)?
-
• #30322
Praxis Alba? FSA (I don't remember what they're called, maybe "Adventure" or similar)
-
• #30323
FSA is shit, I have similar cranks and they have a slightly different BCD and a 19mm axle. So you can't get any aftermarket chainrings and when you finally bin them you also need a new BB.
-
• #30324
would an XT FD work
Shimano Di2 Road and MTB derailleurs don’t work together, right?
-
• #30325
That's my argument for sticking with one brand for the most part. Her bike came with FSA cranks though. They've had a pretty good run actually and were in front of Shimano in terms of offering a sub-compact years before GRX 46/30 was a thing.
